5th gen 4runner or LC100 ? (1 Viewer)

I've also had a 5th gen. Loved it. Good mileage, nice ride, great all around vehicle. I do not think you would go wrong with any of the above choices.

The 4Rs are unbelievably reliable, the argument that a much older LC is more reliable than a newer 4runner does not align for me. Id gladly review data that rejects my point though.

OP has said a few times he isn't going to mod or off-road it.

^^^LOL

I see like 10 4runners a day when driving around, i see maybe 1 LC/LX a week. Once a month maybe i see a modded one, we're in that exclusive club fellas.

You only see 10 4Runners a day? I think I saw 30 on the way to Starbucks this morning!

If you plan to use your truck offroad and its armored with bumpers & swing outs, roof rack, winch, skid plates etc, and then loaded up with all your travel and recovery gear, the LC is probably a better choice for carrying the weight and still performing well on/off road. Also If you pay attention to suspension and driveline components spec'd on the LC 100/200 platform compared to the 150 platform, over time you'll eventually realize a difference in component duty cycle between the two platforms. The 100/200 series are a more robust truck; albeit heavier. Kind of depends on what you plan to do with it.

Heres just one key driveline component difference between the two platforms: the rear diff comparison between 9.5” 100/200 and 8” (8.2) 4Runner/taco/FJ/GX460.

I think that the op is; however, explaining in his description of the two options that essentially he would be buying a LC right when many of those "component duty cycles" as you noted, would be coming up due for replacement. LCs also have the same weak spots the 4r has: front diff and rear LCA for examples. It also uses a timing chain, self lubricating driveline, sealed wheel bearing assemblies, and many other things that make it easier for the layman to maintain.

Just trying to spin this web back towards the OPs specific options and line of questioning. He may be an enthusiast but so far it sounds like he just wants a car to get around in and occasionally get onto a forest road. He doesn't necessarily need the robustness of an LC when it comes with the preventative maintenance that requires finding a specialist to complete it or doing it yourself.

As I have mentioned before, if Land Cruiser’s were the same price as 4runners you would’ve seen 50 Land Cruiser’s and three 4Runners.

100 or 200 is the only option.

Why spend 30k-35k on a used 4runner (prices pulled from Cars.com in Los Angeles TRD trim or higher for comparable 4x4) when you can get a superior 200 for 25k-35k.

Now if you are not too keen on spending that much then a nice 10k-12k 100 series, and budget 5K for baseline and minor upgrades you should be well ahead and have lots of fun without breaking the bank and much better then a 5th gen 4 runner overall.

If you are talking about forest road only, then get a highlander/sienna awd and be done with it.

Which makes me wonder why he isn’t looking at Highlanders instead...
Or hell, a RAV4 for that matter. Think Toyota is releasing a TRD Off-Road version this year...Whatever that means.

Yeah age is what kills cars.. rubber, gaskets , wires, electrical... just wonder how LC100 stand now in this age...vs 2015 4runner..
Yeah 2005 vs 2015 its 10 years difference...

Honestly I would be driving an Acura MDX or Lexus RX if I wanted an SUV if I didnt need to offroad. or and LS430/ 460

is this thread in Chat yet?

I think the lack of use (low mileage) has as many or more potential issues than just age. Age and use is better than age and low mileage due to no use. Many times I’ve seen folks on here spend high dollars on low mileage LC and have way too many issues they weren’t counting on.

I have the same feeling. I bought a low mileage 100 but I was comfortable with it because running the vin on the Lexus owners website showed consistent 5-6k miles a year/oil changes/maintenance for the first 15 years of ownership then 2 years of no records (all 17 years the original owner who i'm assuming brought it to a place that didn't report their services to the online databases) but similar miles driven. That was enough for me to buy it. When I bought the parts for the timing belt replacement, I was told the timing belt was recently replaced but I had it done again anyway with OEM parts (the parts the prior owner used weren't OEM). If the car sat not driven, I would have passed on it. With all i've learned here on Mud the past 2ish years, I think besides a engine swap, I would be able to handle doing almost any maintenance on the 100 with help of mud threads. Heck, i'm already buying tools as they go on sale for a front wheel bearing job I don't need to do for the next 14k miles, haha.

A lot of wishful thinking in this thread - a similar mileage 200 costs a hell of a lot more than a 5th gen. There's no debating this. Also, the 5th gen does not get the same mpg as a 100. C'mon.

OP, like many of us here I've owned both. I have the 100 for a reason, I like it better. But if I was gonna just stay on road and wanted an easy, usable everyday vehicle that held its value I'd buy a 5th gen.

INDEED !
yes 200 cost a lot more. And 4runner more fuel efficient ...that's for sureView attachment 2149248View attachment 2149248

Indeed !
200 cost a lot more... and 4runner are less on fuel than LC 100 and a little with LC200

Yep looks like a Rav 4 is in order

get the 100 series and save your money. Even if I can afford a new 4runner I wouldn't do it. I'm too cheap.

Did someone compare the two with similar mileage that I may have missed? My point was that if the OP had $30k to spend on a 4Runner then its a no brainer to get a superb mint LC for the same price and be light years ahead in every aspect.
