Gives me more time for Sunday brunch. Niiiice!

Sorry for the noob question...but what time should we be in camp Friday morning for registration/driver's meeting stuff? Hope to make it there Thursday night, but don't know yet if that will happen...

Good question. Drivers meeting 0830-0900 and we'll be on the trail by 0915-0930.

I will have sheets for everyone that shows trails, trail times, CB/HAM info, cell numbers, etc. We're going to try and be a little more punctual this year when it comes to times, but we still like leaving this somewhat loose.

We don't get to see each other very often and it's nice to catch up with old friends. Conversations linger and we may miss a time or two. So, if your sheet says your trail leaves at 0900, think of it as 09-ish. It will never be 0858...... @bluecruiser doesn't even wake up until 0859.

Just read about an ABS failure and made me realize another question. Since my wife and I have zero experience driving in the mountains is it recommended to downshift the transmission on declines to keep from frying your brakes? If I disconnect the LX from the RV and have my wife drive that will be something else she will be nervous about doing and will worry about hitting first instead of second or something. I doubt the electronics are sophisticated enough to keep it in second if you accidentally went to first at too high of a speed. This would be between Durango to Ironton and then back to Durango.

We will be staying in the area after the event and wondered if anyone had any restaurant suggestions for Ouray, Telluride, and Durango?

Bloomer-I'm told Instagram is easy since it's only pictures so maybe she could also give a presentation on Twitter-to her Facebook is old news.

The old truck is ready and probably nervous having never been off road before. I am wore out-still have to pack, do a test run on hooking up the towbar, and make the chili. Can't wait to load up Wed. when it's 102-that first beer in Ironton is really going to be a sweet feeling of something I have looked forward too for probably 18 months. Sure hope my family has a great time, too.

When I'm driving in the mountains, I usually turn off overdrive. And when I'm on steep descents, I will often downshift from D to 2.

If you are concerned about towing the LX through the mountains between Durango and Ouray, you have a few other options. They will add time to your drive but you'll be able to avoid the big mountain passes. You could head north to Pueblo, CO and then west on Hwy 50 to Montrose, then south from there. Or you could go even farther north to I-70, go west to Grand Junction, and then south from there. Or, instead of heading north from Durango, go west on Hwy 160, then north through Dolores, past Telluride and make the loop around through Ridgway.

I make it a challenge to use as little braking as possible in the mountains. I also turn off O/D and shift from D/2/L as needed. Second if you still have the AHC turn the dial from comfort to sport to tighten up on the turns.

I really can't wait to get out there, ive been working 12 hour days then working on the cruiser and my beer gut till midnight... my UCA's should be here tomorrow, have to tow the hundo to get an alignment but should be on the road Wednesday afternoon from cali!!

Gentle reminder. Bring stuff that you don't care about getting wet! This is going to be fun!

Hah! I was just looking at the detailed report on weatherunderground. Hopefully it is quick afternoon shower Sat and Sun. On the bright side, Thurs and Fri look very nice. Blackbear here we come!

Good luck weenie-hope they get it fixed. I'll make sure and be behind you on Black Bear though. I have told my wife to anticipate something going wrong on our trip, too. Figured it would have been our LX with all the work I have done or that it has almost 300k (not a big deal). Well the RV rental place called yesterday and said it came back and was broken. Trying to fix it today but confirmed with them it's not the end of the world as it's just the slide out that doesn't work. I'm not going to let that hold us back.

GetOutside-looks like you are in pretty good shape since the hood is down, it's out of the garage, and not on jack stands-but I do see the welder is out! I'll certainly be doing a nut/bolt after the runs everyday just to make sure everything that has been off is tight.

Crossing my fingers that we will be on the road in 24 hours.

Bryan,

Pay no attention to the massive chain that runs from my rear tow point to your front tow point. We both stay up or go down together!

mmm... steep slopes eh...? have a look AND VOTE in the brake failure poll for good luck! :D

Are streams available near camp for bathing (obviously not getting nekked)?

Nope, the stream looks good but I believe it is not good for human use/consumption due to mining use in the past, in that area. There are some showers to use in town though for cheap.

Spent the last few hours making six pounds of chili-making it wimpy so lightweights can eat it. Wife is experimenting with bringing some banana pudding for the kids and for us around midnight. She is bringing the vitamix so if anyone wants to blend a drink like margaritas bring your ingredients.

Ha! I left my garage in even more disarray. My welder and torch were out and used numerous times this week...here's to hoping all is well! We're 400 miles into the trip and so far so good...
