Not sure if this should be in the 70 Series or the 40 Series section but here we go: Will the 3B diesel and 5 speed gearbox from a 1985 BJ70 fit in a late model 40 Series? I realize the 3B is probably not a problem so I guess the main issue is the transfer of the gearbox. Thanks...............1978HJ45

the H55f will fit....

Not trying to show my ignorance but I assume the H55f is the 5 speed manual gearbox in the 1985 BJ70? Did that year model offer a auto gearbox? Thanks...........1978HJ45

What about the drum hand brake set up that sits behind the box , or is that on the earlia 4x series , as the 7x run hand brake in rear diff

i have done a number of these swaps,
rad is different, need one from a diesel 40
make sure you get the 70 series frame mounts, both the engine and tranny.
the e/brake rear diff from a later 40 or 70 series and ebrake cable
stub ends of the driveshafts
shifter will be 3" further back so either the engine will move ahead 3" or the tunnel cover will need to be enlarged back.

VARROOOM (well actually it is more like RATTLE RATTLE )

done.

disagree:
the 13BT:
more expensive
more rare
less power than a 3B-T
more sensitive throttle
poorer fuel economy than the 3B
more expensive to find parts

in the end, just cause something is 'cool' doesn't make it a better swap.

but

i did love to watch Lowenbrau's agent orange at work
The 13BT is obviously a better choice and perhaps worth waiting on however the donor vehicle has the 3B and the 5 speed manual
gearbox. Thanks......1978HJ45

VARROOOM (well actually it is more like RATTLE RATTLE )

I have never owned a Cruiser that went "varrooom". All of mine just "rattled" ( some louder than others). On second thought, I did own a couple of vintage Land Rovers that went "varrooom" however I soon discovered that as the noise level went up the speed did not necessarily go up with it. I would be the first to admit that I have never seen a 13BT therefore my level of knowledge on that powerplant is near zero. ( I assume newer does not necessarily mean better), Thanks......1978HJ45

3B-T?? Something wrong there, no such engine.

The 13B-T was the factory turbo charged version of the 3B engine.

13B-T = 120 hp (89 kW) at 3400 rpm with 159 ft·lbf (217 N·m) of torque at 2200 rpm.

3B = Output is 90 hp (67 kW) at 3500 rpm with 160 ft·lbf (217 N·m) of torque at 2000 rpm

The number 1 (one) before the number of the engine model means that the engine uses direct injection, otherwise, indirect injection

While Wayne is way more than capable of defending himself, as if it was needed, 3B-T nothing wrong there. "3B-T...No such engine...." interesting, I know a guy who has three rigs and each is a 3B-T. The designation simply follows Toyota´s designation: 3B is the engine, T is turbocharged version. 13B-T came from the factory that way but there are lots of folks who have turbocharged Toyota engines, many using the same Toyota turbo chargers as in the factory versions of the engines.

There are several 5 speed manual transmissions that sit behind Cruiser engines. The H55 is the most popular and most easily fit under a 40. there are others that are used in longer wheelbase Cruisers, e.g., H151, R151.

Am I correct in that Toyota offered a factory 5 speed as an option
in the last few production years of the 40 Series? Was that gearbox the H55f? ............1978HJ45

3B-T is a 3B with a turbo. 3B+T make you happier?

I am not aware there was a 3B with a factory turbo.

Was there?

As far as I know all factory turboed B series were designated 1xB-T...x denoting 13B-t or 14B-t ot 15b-t.

Even a Wiki search on B series engine only brings: Toyota B engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Toyota_2B_engine.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Toyota_2B_engine.jpg/220px-Toyota_2B_engine.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/8/87/Toyota_2B_engine.jpg/220px-Toyota_2B_engine.jpg

Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes. 83 and 84 BJ42s had H55Fs.

now it could be your comprehension, or maybe it is your reading words into my posts but where did i say there was a FACTORY turbo 3B?
i said, a turbo 3B will have more power than the 13BT.

No, they are using a factory designation for an engine with an aftermarket turbo.

Would be like calling a 1HZ with an aftermarket turbo a 1HZ-T.

Confusing thing to do, I wouldn't do it, but whatever makes them happy.

Seems you are calling a turbo 3B a 3B-T, in relation to a 13BT?

Using a factory turbo designation for an aftermarket turbo, I can see why that would cause the confusion.

nah, it is just confusing for those that can't think outside the box.
we have been using this designation for a 3B + aftermarket Turbo for years now. catch up grandpa.
