Always heard GL4 on the h55f. Legend is GL5, even GL5/GL4 mix can eat the synchros/yellow parts.

I just asked what people used on my thread and got a few answers.

I went with this. Ordered online, cheap and works great according to others.

Other options are:
Redline MT90, a bit pricey
Stalube GL4 , seems to work fine
Castrol makes a GL4, I’ve found it harder to source locally.

Ok what about difference between 75 90 and 80 90. I see you are running a 80 90 wouldn't a 75 90 be a bit better as it's a broader range.

Its got to say its yellow metal/syncro safe

I've never seen GL5 that meets that requirement

Full synthetic with a friction modifier GL4 that is yellow metal/syncro safe is likely your best option

2x @FJBen and @jayp2 .
Go GL4 to be on the safe side for the Yellow metals. You won't notice much of a difference between 75W and 80W in summer. In winter, the h55f however tends to be hard to shift when cold. Lower cold viscosity helps with that. I'm running 80W.
Cheers Ralf

H55 isnt the smoothest shifting transmission......be patient with it

If you have trouble getting it into reverse, try putting it in 1st/2nd first and you will likely see better results

Sometimes double clutch makes shifts happier....

I have 75/90 in mine year round

As others have stated, 75w90 will be slightly better in cold than 80w90 until it warms up.

I have to break mine in so I’m changing again before winter sets in, however I’ve used 80w90 pretty much all winters with no issues before. If it’s -15f I’m not doing a bunch of driving in the cruiser.

If you want the broader range you can get that, just make sure it’s yellow metal safe.

Well why does the book say gl5 in the manual. I was considering these oils as I can get them near me.
HP Gear Oil 80W-90 - Valvoline™ Global Australia - https://www.valvolineglobal.com/en-au/hp-gear-oil-80w-90/ this is what the lube guide recommends.

Well I had a lengthy discussion with Valvoline and they were certain that all those oils I listed above would work. They said the basic mineral oil 80w90 gl5 will be fine or if I want something synthetic the tdl Pro 75w90 which is a gl4 and a gl5

In all honesty, if you change transmission oil every 30,000kms like the manual says, you will be fine with any of those.

It’s similar to the rabbit hole that is engine oil. Change it and you will be fine. Most of us run GL4

You might find some shift better than others and claim longer intervals. I don’t know how long it takes for a more corrosive gl5 brand to eat yellow metals.

Yeah that's true but at the same time I don't want to be putting something that is no good for it. Something that they did say is the 8090 is a little better as it will hold its viscosity better. But then you call gearbox shops they say say only run gl4. Where Valvoline say Toyota specify gl5 so it's fine.
