Hi all - I recently picked up a triple locked 1996 fzj80, the weird part is that it has a 5x150 lug pattern rather than the stock 6x139.7.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a swap like this, why the previous owner may have done it, where the parts would have come from (105 series??).

Ideally I'd want to switch back to the 6x139.7 setup, mostly because wheels are significantly easier to find, but not exactly sure what would go into that.

Thanks.

Never heard of that swap, could it have wheel adapters on it?

There a handful of people who've swapped to 5 lug hubs.

Front end is fairly easy. Swap the whole hub assembly.
Knuckle, birfs, bearings are the same.

The rear is trickier. Axles, axle flange etc are different from 80 - 105 series.
Easiest way to go back might be to swap the entire test housing/ diff assembly.

You also need to figure out the ratio used. 105series all used 4 3:1. 80s used 4.1:1
If 105 series diff centres have been used, the 105 uses thicker axles with 32 splines, not 30. Centres are not interchangeable without also swapping axles, and hubs.
Rear diff gears are also not interchange. 105 series did gears are beefier and use different hardware. (front gears swap ok)

Depending on what's actually be done, you might need to source custom made axles to convert back.

It's probably a lot easier to find wheels to suit, even if range is limited.

79 series also work.
Fronts are direct replacement as are pads and calipers.
Rear brake drum components also swap out. I was able to pick up complete rears, backing plates, brakes and hubs at $400.00, now have found a supplier how will sell for $100.00.
These are available because some mining companies want upgrades and these parts are redundant.
Guessing the rears are simple because some of our 75's had the 6 bolt hubs swapped out to 5 bolts when the 79's came into service.
This was mainly to streamline tires and rims from a logistical standpoint.

One thing to keep in mind if looking at swapping housings, 79 series rear axle housings are narrower track width than the front, and both are narrower than the 80 series.
Common complaint about 76/79 series is that the rear track width is quite a bit narrower than front track.

It is an upgrade, I would not remove it. If disc brakes rear, they are bigger than 80 series as well.

Cheers

Agreed.
Stronger wheel studs.
Stronger hub studs and hardware
Bigger brakes all round.

If it uses 105 series diff centres too, stronger rear gears, stronger rear axles
Less options for wheels maybe
