I'm looking to get the 4wd emblem on the back of my '69 cruiser. I'm wondering were they originally only installed on the passenger side? All the ones I see available say passenger side. I don't see any holes where it would have been installed before. My toyota emblem is on the driver side. I need to take a closer look but I don't see any fasteners for that (glued on?). I have a tire carrier on the passenger side. Would it be blasphemy if I put the 4wd emblem on the driver side?

I searched 1969 FJ40 and here are some shots of emblem locations:

Hope that helps. Below the backup light is where I've seen them. There definitely should be some holes for these as they are bolted on (2 holes per emblem). It's possible they replaced the panels or put putty over them. Look from the back side - you would see putty pushing through.

My 1970 also has the tire carrier on the passenger side.
No holes for the emblems on the drivers side either.
They could have been covered up though with the bondo my p.o. like so much.

Thanks, I guess it was just the categorizing these websites were using threw me off. The same one can go on either side probably. I just wasn't sure if the ones I've seen were not original. ginmtb what search engine did you use? I never get results that good. Also, any ideas on the Toyota emblem? Is that supposed to be fastened on? I looked from the back/underneath side and didn't see any screws or holes.

The Toyota emblem should also be fastened through holes which were originally there, similar to what upperblack posted for the 4 wheel drive emblem.

You also will need two "plateau" shaped (for lack of a better word) brackets to mount the emblem. If you notice, the mounting posts are only partially threaded and the nut will bottom out before the emblem is tight. See picture.

Definitely right on that one brian. I knew I could just put it there, just wasn't sure if it was not legit.

Guess that makes me the ultimate blasphemer! Years ago I added a spare tire carrier from a '68 onto my '76 to use as a jerry can holder. It blocked my OEM emblems so I removed them and stuck them on my bumperettes thinking I'd get less "nice jeep" comments that way. Didn't work though, apparently fools can't read. If I do happen to get rear ended, God forbid, replacing a couple of emblems will probably be the least of my worries.
