Too far north. Too far east.
I would have swapped 4 and 5 around.
Although if it weren't for the first generation there wouldn't have been anything to write about so it deserves 1st or second place on that aspect alone.

I still have my 3rd gen, so can't speak to 4th or 5th. However, my first gen was an exceptional vehicle so should be right up there as it's really the "anchor" vehicle of the family. Without the quality and capability of the first gen. there would be no 4Runner discussion. Unfortunately my first gen was stolen, or I may just have it still. I don't know. Of the first three, my second gen was bottom of the list by far, with the gas sucking 3.slow explodamachine. I have seen nice 2nd gen SAS swaps though, which makes me wonder... A second gen ~4BT might have overtaken the 40 as the ultimate "vehicle to take coast to coast after WWIII"

I do love my '99 though. Still.

I disagree with what he said. I would put the 3rd last and I think I would put the 5th forth. The new 4Runner is a nice vehicle, where the others where maybe the best you could buy at the time they where sold, I believe the new one is lacking or falling behind But that’s my $0.02

I wouldn't trust Doug Demuro's opinions on 4Runners. He has a long running series of articles about his Land Rover that he bought at CarMax and all the expensive repairs it has required. At least he bought the super duper CarMax warrant that pays for all the repairs.
