Ok some things have changed since my most recent decision to buy a TLC 100. Before I was hoping to scrape together 10-12K for an 03-05 Land Cruiser by the end of the year and pinch the heck out of pennies to get new tires/lift/bumpers etc. Well....... some investments came in rather nice (and out of the blue) and we're looking at a little more money to spend. So here's the deal, now I don't know if I should buy something a lot newer or stick with the original plan. If things continue along this path I can probably buy a 2013 TLC at the end of the year and build it but the price tag has me going . So in the next 3 months I'll have 40k sitting liquid to either do a build or reinvest. Dang but I want an LC badly and I want the lift/rear drawer storage/Slee bumpers and sliders/RTT/etc.

I guess what I'm asking is if you had the chance to run with something like what I'm talking about would you do it or wait for a few months and see? My lady has already told me to do what I think is best for us (I hate when she does that since we want a house by the end of the year also).

Get a 2006 or 07 with the 285 hp and you should be happy with that vehicle for many years to come.

Put the money into a house. Trucks are a waste of money. A house is an investment.
wow, where do you live? -edit: -> nevamind, just saw you're in BC. Houses bought here in the last 10 years have been a crappy investment (with very few excepted areas) and will continue to be so for the casual investor.

There was an '06 LX for sale with ARB bumpers F/R in the classifieds earlier this week.

But I agree, if your original budget was 10-12K (which won't get you much in the way of an '03-'05, more like a '99-'01), you must've gotten a heck of windfall to want to blow $40K on a rapidly depreciating asset. But to each their own, I guess.

^ this. Plus looking at the calendar its not April 1st yet, is it?

$40k on a cruiser? Why spend it on only one? I'd buy a 100, do some moderate upgrades, then use it as an semi-expedition, hunting, camping, trips-to-the-beach with the family rig. I'd also get a 80 because the 100 is just too damn pretty to constantly beat up on the trail. And then to top it off, I'd buy a tan 40 to putt around town in with the top down. Hell, the 40 can be used on day trips when you want to reeeeaallly wheel it hard, too.

realized I just described my dream garage....sorry to high jack the thread. good luck on the purchase! :D

i agree with him ^

Buy something used and at least semi built and use the rest to put down a good down payment on a house. Just my 2 cents.

does he not have a house?

two chicks man, thats what I'd buy if I had that kind of money... sorry just saw that movie and seemed perfect right now

Screw all that, tell us what to invest in!!! I want your problem...

A house is a terrible investment... a truck is worse.
But if you're determined to buy a Land Cruiser - yeah, buy used!

I bought this for $33,500 last year - a 2006 with 39,000 miles

Its been covered but that picture is sooooooo good Manhattan! Should be a Toyota ad!

You had to scrape pennies to get 10-12k last month and now you want to spend 40k on something that will NEVER increase in value?

No house, so I assume no garage, I just don't get it:confused: The title says family build, does that mean you have kids? You could spend half of that money and end up with a nice, well built rig that will take you almost anywhere and last you a long time, and invest the other 20k in your family's future. JMHO of course.

Then again, it's not my money and I already have a house and a savings.......
Spend away!!!!

"If things continue along this path I can probably buy a 2013 TLC at the end of the year"

I'd wait to see if things continue along that path before sinking that much into any vehicle. Perhaps look at a nice 03-04, great family vehicle that'll run you about 20k. Do a slow build if the money keeps coming in.

Once you've got the house, retirement, kids college, etc squared away, then get a new cruiser.

Comments about property not being an investment come from people that know nothing about real estate.....

That aside, I'd personally wait and see what happens with gas prices. As it increases, resale will drop. I bought my 2000 in 2006 when gas prices were going up from a guy who had to drive too much for 16k.

By now I have easily spent more than I paid doing mods and such. We do that for love of the ride...

Find a price you are willing to spend, reinvest the rest and wait for the right rig some soccer mom is trying to dump because gas is too high. At the end of the year spend the extra you reinvested in towards that New house... and if you have a current house, find a solution that makes it cash neutral or better... positive.
