What year truck are you working on?

You mean it doesn't blink? That's a ground problem. I'm guessing in the front fender turn signals. If the bulb is out it will do the same thing, but I'm assuming that you checked the bulb.

Yep, doesnt blink...and its a 76

If the bulb's not dead, it's a marginal ground problem. Take the lamp on that side all apart and sand/file all the mating surfaces where the ground needs to get through. There are several places where the reflectors need to ground to each other and the whole shebang needs to ground to the fender.

Very likely in many cases, but not always.

Early turn signal assemblies (pre-09/72) are not the same as the later style (09/72 and on) in that, they mount differently and the switch mechanism is mounted on the steering column differently. The earlier style uses a pin on the switch body to align it with the column and one screw on an integrated clamp affair to keep it secured. Sometimes this screw can back out, causing the switch to no longer be indexed on the column and to be loose, creating a situation where the switch is not fully activated by the remote turn signal linkage that runs parallel with the column to the switch. This can make a turn signal indicator lamp, along with the front and rear directional lamps to light up, but the system to not flash in one direction or the other.

I have found this to be the case on more than a couple early Land Cruiser turn signal switches.

Yep, just had this EXACT thing on a club members rig couple of weeks back. We were pulling our hair out trying to figure out why it would work if we pulled the switch off the column but not when it was on the column. I had no idea about the indexing. Stumbled on to it by accident. ;)

There is a sweet spot where it worked both sides. One more thing to add to the turn signal 'tune-up' on an early 40. :D

It's time to resurrect this thread.

I'm having the same basic problem, but I've checked this, and the pin seems to be seated, and the screw tight. When switched to the right, it works fine. For the left, though, I need to push and hold the lever down to keep the signal on.

Is there anything else I can adjust to get it indexed correctly?

Thanks everybody...this helped more than just FJResto:p
