Sorry for the ignorant question but what issue does the 40 top plate for a H55F resolve?

it moves the shifter forward on the trans so it ends up where it should be on a 40
the 60 series shifter is at the rear of the trans

Bolts right on, no modifications needed.

Ich hoffe diese Informazion hilft.

Actually only really applies to 1979-1984 models where it moves the shifter forward the requisite 3" but also requires a transfer case shifter fix AND an obsolete sheet metal cover panel. On a simply flat tunnel system 1958-1978 who the hell cares as the standard 60/70 series (identical to one another). It in my opinion is a $250 fix that costs more than $1500.

I am not a fan at todays cost.

Top cover for the 40 series H41/H42 was the same thru out the production. 8/80 the reverse light moved for the back to the top for the split transfer case. Earlier four speed have the boss on the top where reverse light switch could moved to. Pre 1/79 were not just flat. They tapered down before the front of the seat. Prior 9/72 the cover ended before it was flat with the floor. These were also short than the 9/72-1/79 covers. Newer the 40 seris the easier the conversion. As for the inspection cover all 10/82 covers were the same except for the hole for the transfer case shifter which is about a 1" further back. Transmission openings are the same for the four speed and five speed. Boots are the same for either from 10/82+

79+ transmission tunnel doesn't taper down like previous years. 8/80 the under the transmission motor mount started. 10/82 the transmission hump was higher Infront of the inspection plate because of the H55F. 10/82 and later the H55F was a complete bolt in process with correct parts on complet built SWB and MWB 40 series. LWB never had an H55F because did not have a rear axle hand brake on complete built vehicles. Heard in Australia they use the rear driveshaft from the early 60 series with the short H41/H42 for the LWB H55F conversion. Hand brake cable from 75 series.

Personally like how the H42's shift cane feels in the FJ40. Moving it further back will change that. I did pay $2,200 including shipping from Australia for my first top cover. But it did come with some extras.

I agree $1,500 seems like a lot for just a cover if you already have the 60 series top cover. But $250 doesn't seem realistic either. There are not that many used 40 series top covers out there being separated for the transmission. How many would need to be made to get the price to $250. It's the setup cost for just a few that drives the price up. Bet you could order a 100,000 units and get the price down.

Tell us about the access panel. I have several different covers but none work without some modification as far as I can tell. Primarily the angle on the the bottom left corner is not correct for my 5/80

Probably because it's a 10/82+ tub?

Here is my 3/82 tub which is the same a 1/79-7/82.

The later inspection cover fits pretty good along the right side and part of the back.

10/82 tub and inspection cover changed. Three speed end and only four and five speeds were used. Only difference is the location of the opening for the transfer case shifter. The one above is a four speed inspection cover with a modified transfer shifter to reach the opening further towards the front. Transmission and transfer boots were the same for both transmission and transfer case. But were different from previous years.
