Hey everyone,
I have been asked to do a build thread here , of my 66 fj40 build up. I am not sure if it should be in this "section" or "Hardcore" so here we go....

FIRST A LITTLE HISTORY....... FINALLY.... after years of wanting and searching for a 40 I stumbled across an ad for one in our local classifieds....66 landcruiser ,new GM 350 , soft-top ,hard-top ,winch ,new 33" tires and wheels, new brakes w/new wheel cylinders....$2,800..obo
so I presented the ad to the wife...threw down my best puppy eyes and said I gots to buy this....wife says call and go look at it , the ad was several days old ,figured it was probably gone by now
I called and it was still available....so away we went...(middle of winter 10*)we pull up and there it is in the middle of a field running "purrin' like a kitten" got out did a quick walk-around ...I hate the cold!!! . It was what the ad had stated...long story short offered him 2,400 and he took it.....WHOOO HOOOO !!
I didnt even drive the thing...I've wanted one for a long time and this seemed like a great deal.....anyway this was 2 years ago....havent had much time to work on it since purchasing it the whole thing was covered in bed liner crap ..and I mean EVERYTHING !! So thats where I started ...had to remove that s***E !!! was not fun but got it done...anyway heres some pics of when I got it and what I have to work with.....
HERES THE PLAN ...retain all running gear for now ,link- it FRONT and REAR ,want to keep full bodied look ,possibly dove tail rear, add cage, bumpers, blah ,blah, blah, just want to make trail worthy for now ...MODIFY as needed . so here it is ...WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THIS 40.....? (keeping the budget as low as possible)

I painted what was bare with some "Aervoe" protective paint, and then began to layout some tube work.

I bent up some tube for "lower body protection" ,"tube fenders",and some rollcage pieces.

Then I cut the fenders off leaving the inner fenderwell's in place

LOT'S OF CLEAN-UP TO DO AT THIS POINT.......cleaned up front and rear housings

I also decided I will be "linking" the front and rear, so I built some "axle truss / upper link mount" attachment point's...

Once I got the "stock housings" cleaned up, I scored a set of FJ 60 housings from my nieghbor !! :bang: and quickly began the housing cleaning process "again"

Since I will be gaining more track width, front disc brakes, and bigger pinion I felt the setback was worth it :grinpimp:!!!

There was quite a few more things to cut off the fj60 housings , as they were loaded with all the latest goodies, swaybars etc.

I also lucked out because the truss's I built fit them with minimal trimming, due to different slope where the tube transistion's to the the third member section :D

Nice, what size are the two different sets of tires. Love the snow pics.

235/85/16 and 38.5/14.50/15 I like the snow pics too, just dont think I'm ready for winter again,already...it snowed in the hills just above us last night !!

Then it was out with the "old axle" and in with the new!!:D

I will be using an fj80 steering box, allowing me to move it further back on the frame and out of harms way ,unlike the saginaw set up !!;)

Then I proceed'd to clean the frame up and remove all unneccesary brackets..

Suspension parts ...

The rear coil springs are OME 3.5" front springs and buckets from an fj80

The front springs are a 3.5" Fabtech progressive rate coil off of my 98 Tacoma IFS lift combined with some home brew ingenuity, more on that later...:D

For my "upper links" I ordered up some 2" .250 wall DOM (12')

For my "lower links" I went with some 2.25" .375 wall DOM (12')

For the "Joints" I chose Ballistic's 2.63 forged joints W/1.25 shank, I also ordered some of their forged joints W/poly bushings, I ordered 8 of each along with the appropriate tube adapters, jam nuts and their handy tool for rebuilding and adjusting the joints.

I also tried saving myself some time and ordered some brackets since they were having a sale.
