4 speed done on the 62 now need an exhaust.

No, the O2 sensors stay. They're needed so the ECU can measure and control the air/fuel mixture. They're a critical part of the fuel injection system, but separate from the smog control system. The catalytic converters can go though, but honestly I'll be having a new single pipe cat with a Flowmaster 50 series installed when I have a whole new exhaust built from the ground up.

@Seth S damn that's pretty. Pricey as hell though. Is this the same design as the one that was in the works a few years ago that went belly up?

they are made to order. Price is inline with other full stainless systems. I have a full stainless system on my DDwith a large pipe coming off the turbo and a new cat and it was about $1300

Keep the stock exhaust manifolds, they're very free flowing.

Find a good muffler shop local (if there is one) and have them build you an exhaust out of 11 ga Aluminized pipe (you don't need stainless), and use good mufflers, like Magnaflow. They can also to Weld-in or bolt in CATS to your preference. You'll also need bungs for the O2 sensors.

They can use larger pipe, like 3", and build into one CAT and muffler...

If there's a Muffler shop that does Hot Rod, Classic Cars, they usually do the best job...
Thanks for these details! ❤
Aside from being loads more fun to drive the 4 speed transmission has highlighted the short comings in my exhaust system. After searching for a while on-line it seems no one makes a system including headers for the FJ62 any longer. Is this going to be a visit a local muffler shop type thing to get replaced? If so I am a little bummed. Wanted to do this myself and hoping to find bolt ons. A few years ago Walker made a system, now it is even NLA. Anyone else have any luck or options?
I’m in a similar boat with my FJ62

I’m having a similar issue with my FJ62- FOLLOWING!

For my '86 FJ60 build (3FE and H55f) I used the 3FE exhaust manifolds, the FJ60 catalytic converter, and the FJ62 OEM muffler/tailpipe assembly. First, I had a local muffler shop that specializes in custom lowriders fabricate a short section to go between the FJ60 catalytic converter and the FJ62 muffler (the FJ62 exhaust pipe upstream from the muffler is about 6" shorter than the equivalent FJ60 assembly). That was $20 using flanges I provided. I took that home and temporarily installed the exhaust system, using the FJ60 hangers, from the catalytic converter to the end of the tailpipe. Next trip to the muffler shop I drove the FJ60 and delivered the FJ62 downpipes and Y pipe, along with the flanges and O2 sensor bungs. One day and $200 later I had a nice system using mostly OEM parts. And I got rid of the FJ62 pipe that used to run under the frame rail, one of the best improvements IMO.

@TexFJ , hey man! 4speed because I didn't haver the money for the 5 speed and repairing the A440 was not an option. Additionally the transmission itself was a gift from a cool fellow mudder. Head's up @Shes Mad!
Understood.

Cost wise: $4-speed rebuilt < $5-speed rebuilt < $5-speed new ?

Can the new H55F be still bought direct from Toyota? Or just through the retailers?

Can still be bought new. For reference I saw a clean looking 4 speed listed in the classifieds for $250. Thats less than 10% of the cost of the new 5 speed.

oof... stay away from that one. :wrench:

I had been planning on having a custom setup done with a new single large diameter cat and a Flowmaster 50 series muffler. I expect for a complete custom set it would only be a little less spendy than this. I wonder how well this clears the rear shackles (for the sake of not heating up the grease like my current tailpipe placement does, which keeps me having to regrease that one shackle pin regularly already). Sure would be nice to have a bolt in system that's nice and tucked up, quiet and will last a good long time. Stainless for an exhaust is still not corrosion proof though, unfortunately. Like @Spike Strip said, aluminized steel will last a good long time, especially 11ga. I hesitate to go up to 3" for a single pipe though on a 3FE though. Maybe a 2F. You don't want to go too big lest you reduce the velocity of exhaust gas flow and actually lose performance (unless you've got a turbo). 2.5" single was a huge improvement over the stock exhaust size when I did it many years ago.

Edit: If there was an 11ga aluminized 2.5" version of this stainless one available as a bolt in, I'd jump at it without hesitation.

It depends on the grade of stainless used. I have a cat back system I bought used from a friend who bought it new. I ran it for a couple years and now it’s in storage and it still looks brand new.

It'll definitely last longer that carbon steel, but in most cases you'll pay a premium (beyond even the system linked) for a higher grade of stainless that's even more resistant to corrosion.

625 inconel though, THAT'S where it's at. To the cost of about 50 G's for enough to make a 60 series exhaust 😂

On my daily driver the carbon steel replacement for the cat back was $500. The BSR stainless system was about $650. I determined this was a better decision. I had to replace the front half as well and it was about $650 for a large diameter downpipe with a new cat vs about the same cost for the stock setup. So I really didn’t pay much of a premium and I have no doubts that this system will last longer.

I’ve had good luck with aluminized steel as well but after a fewVT winters those start looking pretty rusty. Where my stainless system weathered multiple VT winters and showed no signsof corrosion.

I did by a used cheap low grade stainless system and it only lasted about 5 years. But for $200 it was a good return on investment.

I would simply have a custom exhaust place do a cat-back system. They can weld it and make is very stout and secure. Putting it together from pieces is a lot of work.
