4 sp shifter removal

i know this is extremely basic but i dont want to mess up anything. how do i remove my shifter. non of my manuals show me how this is done.

Hey Bill,

I use two screw drivers and put one in the top corner (upper right) of the outer cover that has the flat sides. Put the other driver in the opposite corner, push down while turning the whole thing clock wise. (if I remember right)

Corner, meaning corner of the flat side.

just like scrapdaddy said above, there is some spring preasure there so it will take a bit to get it to go down and twist.

I finally got it out. Boy that was a bear.

After a few times, you remember the best way to do it and can pop it right out. Glad you got it.

I made a tool with a piece of channel notched to go around the ball, welded tabs to the flats of the fork that stuck down to grab the flats of the ball. gives me a place to apply downward pressure then just turn the wrench...it's still a bear tho...I finally solved it with a 19 spline 4 speed...
