4 gear 4.11 VS 5 gear 4.56

I'm about to replace my 4 speed with a 5 speed, so with the 4.11s in now, in 5th my final drive will be (.84 X 4.11) 3.45.

I'm turning 33 inch tires, should i go to 4.56? then I'd have 3.83 in fifth, better than the stock 4.11 but not as good as 5 spd/4.11

Is the 4.56 a bolt in into my carrier? Are there other optioons, or is the 4.56 an the easy way out.

The next thing I buy is a locker, and if and when I do, that's when i'd do the gear swap...
 
If money is no object, go with 4.56s or even 4.88s. Other things to consider are what your intended uses are and if you are stuck on 33 inch tires or you might consider larger ones.
 
Money is an object....my intended use...I tend to travel, then offroad..I tow an M101 full of camping gear, so highway driving is an issue, and low end when i'm offroad...

I'm 33 x 9.5 x 15 now, and will probably be going to a 10.5 wide tire soon...don't know about changing the height....
 
If money is an issue, I would skip the 5 speed because the last thing you will need with 4.11s and 33s is an overdrive.
 
I already have the 5 speed...and it gives me a lower 1st gear than the 4 speed...and I agree 4.11s, 33" tires and the .84 over drive will suck...that's why i'm trying to figure out where to go from here. I am planning to turbo the 3B, so that should take care of the power problem, but I'm still questioning if i should go to lower gears when i put the locker in....
 
Hi All:

Yes, I'd say the swap to 4.56 ratio R&P gears will compensate for the "overdrive effect" of the 33 inch tires, getting the engine back into its intended powerband. A friend of mine did the 4.56 swap after installing a H55F in his FJ60, and it has worked well for him (running 33X12.5R15 tires.)

Running a 2F with 4.56's and H55F is a great combo in my opinion and should suit 33's well. It did for mine when I ran 34's. Could have been tempted by 4.88's but it's all a trade off. 4.56 has a stronger pinion than 4.88's.

So I tweaked the engine a little :D

if you can afford to tweak the engine like matts than any gear/tire combo will be ok;)
 
It's a 3B, I'm just waiting for the turbo to show up...don't know how a turboed 3B compartes to a 2F....

I have 2 friends with turbo'd 3B's my old 2F would out run both just :D but the above combo worked well with it.

See here pre turbo and tweak, 4.56's and H55F along with the blue and beige turbo'd 3B's both are on 4:11's and 4 speeds




As for the new 2F-ETI well that's a little special :grinpimp:
