I was replying to this remark from you schotts

Yes. Thanks. I was just re-thinking about things when I seen Hoser's remark about a rock crawler.

I'll be there's room for a 36 and present lift. After all, Slee's Nitto's were tad larger than BFG 315s. I'd bet with a small amount of added work that a 36 will fit. They opens beck up a 5.29 option to me. The rock crawler thing though is a reality. The 100 can go!

Opion #1! I wanna see some cut 100s!

Either way...the next 100 will get cut. Check out the diffeence on approach and departure angles. Doing this will help the 100 even more than the 80.

Pic 1: The typical loaded 80...he has to move way down where the rock face isn't near as steep.
Pic 2: A cut 80...BIG difference huh? I can drive head on and at the steepest part.

This helps on almost every obstacle.

Imagine now what a cut 100 will do on the trail? WOW!

Chaouleau Gap. This slickrock isa blast. With the front and rear cut watchers are amazed that I can pull stright up to the rock and climb without a slip. 80's have to move down quite far and my 100.....even farther...the beast!

OK, thread hi-jack over. :)

Amando's is the closest setup to this and he did a super job. The only improvments I can see to his are:

frame shortening to accomodate tucked-in bumpers (needed!)
2000+ (so TRAC is there)
N74L shocks (needed!)
Some trimming for 36-inch tires

Don't forget the winches.

Amando's front bumper will be rebuilt to accept 9000lbs winches, very tightly fitted and yet we are not sure what the new angle appoach it going to be.

Cheers,

Cheers,

A winch greatly reduces the approach angle. No winches on my 80's or next 100. Defeats the purpose.

Yes, you're right, just wave to Amando (he will follow your rig no matter where) and he will pull you out. :D

Cheers,

That's the point. Take the strap or somebody else winch if needed. Selfish huh? :D

Oh, and very true about pulling my 100 out. Like the typical 80, the 100's a overweight beast too. My goal would be though to build a second 100 just like my unique 80's. My 80's can do lines and take obstacles others in the group cannot. The shorter length helps a lot. With the 100 being even longer I'd have to get even more aggressive. Like my 80's. This is what I'd go for in the 100 though I'd shoot for an even shorter nose:

Hey, it is time for Moab again. What truck are you bringing John? :D

The real one...the Lexus. :D

It's highly unlikely I can come again this year. I'll miss it though! I'd would seriously bring the LX. The 100's retired until I get another one.

You know what? I've always agreed with this until my last mod to the 100. Now that I have the same articulation in the rear as an 80 and am within 2-ish inches front articulation, my 100 feels just like my 80 on the obstacles. No crap! No reason to lie. I have 2 80's for gosh sakes!
I stand corrected. My 100 CAN be a rock crawler! ;)
John, I can't wait till you get that next 100!

Seems there is a lot more to rock crawling than just the length of the vehicle. I would be worried about snappin' CV's that are coupled with a locked diff and big tires. Then there is the low range t-case gears available for the 100 series (zero). Or, maybe I should worry about the weight of the vehicle. Those pics of the 80 climbing the rock wouldn't be MY definition of rock crawling. Then again, maybe those pictures were added to prove the point of approach/departure angles. Anyway, like Christo pointed out, our definitions of rock crawling are different.

Crap, build the truck. I'd really like to see how it turns out. When it's done we can go hit Johnson Valley and the Hammer trails. Of course, I will bring my '75 Bronco with lengthened wheelbase, 35 spline front and rear, Atlas t-case, Detroits, and long travel suspension. The sprung over 62 will stay at home because, in my opinion, Land Cruiser wagons are simply NOT rock crawlers.

Shotts, I'm really not trying to get you aggrivated. It is just hard for me to picture ANY 100 series rock crawling in what I define as rock crawling. I need to see something more difficult than climbing stupid ledges. In those pics you posted, throw in some boulders and off camber stuff and then let's see the shortened 100 crawl through.

My next project.............F350 Super Duty rock crawler, crew cab, custom "clearance" bumpers (this was thrown in to piss you off)

ROTFLMAO!!!

Personally, I want a 6x6 stretch Hummer H1 Alpha with chrome grille guard.

Gotta agree though, IMHO the 100 may be the ultimate touring off-roader, but is not optimal for a rock-crawler. I was there when Amando took his 100 through the Rubicon, from Loon to Tahoe, but it was not easy, which is as much a testament to Amando's driving skills as anything else. Even in the 80s there were issues.

Now, a straight axle 85 4Runner or Mini may have just about the perfect dimensions...

My $0.02,

Wow, this thread really went to @&@&@&@& We were discussing gearing and now we are debating bumpers and rockcrawling??? So maybe we can get it back on track? The topic of 4.88 gearing is important to some of us.

The way I see it, and please correct me if I'm wrong, we have several scenarios:

#1 98-99 LC with e-locker
#2 98-99 LC without e-locker
#3 98-99 LX with limited slip
#4 00+ with TRAC
#5 00+ with TRAC and ARB locker

How are these different? Are the axles different on the models with the Toyota e-locker and if so, what does that mean?

This topic comes up over and over with no resolution. I'd like to know what Carl (montocr) can do for us? If someone ships their 3rd member to Carl can you set this up? How much would it cost (ballpark)?

Same thing for Slee? How much would it cost?

And what would it cost to cut a small batch of custom gears so other changes are not needed at all? I have a tough time believing there is no market for gears when you factor in overseas sales, but maybe I'm being ignorant...

Thanks to Carl and Cristo for adding the TECH to this thread, because I just have questions.

Calamaridog,
Thank you for bringing this back on track. I'd like to piggyback onto your questions. Can a 99 axle with e-locker (entire axle including housing, brakes, etc.) be swapped into an 01? If so, that would eliminate the need of using parts from two ARB's and then you could go Carl's route. So, in my case, I would buy a complete axle from a wrecked 98 or 99 LC. Then, have the 4.88's added like Carl did, then bolt the whole thing up to my 01. Two questions though, one, would I need additional electronics to run the locker and two, are the brakes the same on the 98-98 vs. the 01 since it has TRAC?
