4.7 VVTI engine to 2001 land cruiser (5 Viewers)

Hi folks.
I own 2001 LC and need to overhaul the engine.
Other option is to replace it completely.

Can anyone inform me if a newer version VVTI 4.7 from 2005-2007 land cruisers is possible to utilize in older trucks?
Anyone had experience doing it yet?

I would imagine engine brain, possibly transmission and transmission brain would need to be also from VVTI engine donor.


I would appreciate any info on this.

I am sure it could be done. You would not need the transmission from the donor, but the ECU and engine wire harness from the donor vehicle would be needed. This is not the sort of job you would want to learn as you go or trust to someone who isn't up to the task, so check with a shop you trust and see if they will do it. It's going to cost you. If it were me, I'd call Foreign Engines in Lynnwood, WA and see what they have.

why does the engine need an overhaul?

Sure just drop it in. Easy 100-300 hours work (study & hands-on) if fast and you've a donor 06-07 100 series.

Then change out: Most if not all wire harnesses, computers, relay, fuse boxes, junction boxes, all EVAP stuff, exhaust manifold, CATs, A/F & O2 sensors, fuel tank. There may also be issue with, bell housing used in 01 (someone looking into this now, as PN# is different). So may as well swap in the newer 03- up transmission. Oh yeah, re - gearing would be best or just swap all of the drive-train.

Simple, to find out what all parts. Just study parts diagrams for the target and donor.

Just playing with you. As you can see there are many components to consider. But the 100 series LC or LX 98-07 body and frame, are for the most part the same.

If you're heads are good you could use the block from the VVTI motor and just sell the rest. I don't think the blocks changed over the years but someone may correct me on that. Don't know how handy you are though.

Although heads of VVT will likely bolt on, a non VVT 4.7L block. There are difference. For one piston are different. Some difference like rings, lower cylinder oil sprayers, main bearings, rod bearings should not make a difference. As they just have reduced environmental manufacture consideration. But piston clearance to valves may be. But now your back to needing every thing else, other than short block.

Now a VVT short block used with non VVT heads in 98-05. Is they real question. Why; if a short block bad, it opens up a broader used parts market..

Just get an engine from 00 or 01 for your 2001.

I got a 98 engine for my 01 and the wiring harness for the trans plug was different, had to switch the entire harness over.

Just use the VVTI engine with the ECU from your current engine and accessories. Use a simple RPM switch to switch the VVTI solenoid at the right RPM. Or don't it will run just fine without VVTI hooked up just won't rev out all the way to 6k.

You could put the variable intake from a VVTi engine and a set of headers on an earlier engine and have nearly the same power* with a fraction of the effort and cost.
