I've never been super happy with the original timing belt videos we did. We had a 4.7 out of a truck this week so I took the opportunity to update the videos while there was an unobstructed view. Just finished part one and should have part two done in the next few days.

A lot of T-belt questions lately, this is timely. SWEET video!

I enjoyed your other on the subject done in vehicle 4.7 Timing belt replacement

That statement about the fan can be stuck on fan bracket shaft nub is so true! I just did a fan bracket replacement that had failed. Is was a bear to get off, adding 20 minute to job.

The book procedure of turning crank 50 degrees CW to avoid interference, is one I also do. Even though we've so many accounts that (non VVt 2UZ-fe) is not and interfering engine on a break.

Have you guy's seen damage from a timing belt failure, either interference or other?

Hope you don't mind that I add what FSM has on the "aprox. 50 deg ATDC/compression" This is from 2000 FSM (non VVT)

I've only seen two broken belts on the 4.7 so far. Both survived, but both broke at start up not highway speed. Strangely enough both were also rodent damage from the litle trapezoid by the water pump being left out. There's a couple specs on where to set the crank for timing belt removal. I can never keep them straight so I look them up each time to be certain. :) Some of them get removed at TDC and some are even before TDC.

Yeah, I too look at FSM (always).
FWIW here's the 2UZ- fe VVT which is done 45 deg BTDC.

I've never seen an OEM belt break, the only ones i hear breaking are ones that were changed. I have taken apart Sequoias and T4R belts well beyond 200K miles with original belt and they practically look new. Coworker's dad has a 4.7 T4R with 275K miles and still on the same belt, i don't think it'll ever break. I'm at 135K on the original belt and have no plan on changing it.

I'll change it when my WP starts leaking.

Great video. I'm a little surprised it is a bit more complex than I was expecting. I have replaced a pulley bracket before but not full TB and water pump job.

I pulled a couple of belts recently between 90-127K . Both had new belts replaced at Toyota or Lexus at ~7 years of age, neither replaced idler bearings. Both had bad idler bearings, that should have been replaced with job. These would not have last till next service IMHO.

This was 06 GX470 belt replaced at Lexus dealer on east cost, only a few 100 miles earlier at ~90K. The didn't replace idlers, but should have. Tensioner side idler bearing looked and sounded bad, which any sound when free spinning is bad IMO.

Video was super helpful! Thank you...

I have seen 2 failed timing belts, one survived, and the other did not. That was a 2004 LC with 380 k miles on it with unknown history. The engine was killed, they procured a replacement one from carparts.. It was at Pearl Auto Service in Portland, OR in 2016. That rig was a local fixture, guys from other shops would come for a look and a head scratch.

The one (380K mi) that did not survive, can you give more color? Like what was damaged and how damage was determined (pictures would be great).:hmm:

Curious how many total you’ve done?Very interesting both failures were rodent damaged. That’s good news for belt durability.

What would you say is a realistic nonOCD mileage schedule on the timing belt, water pump, etc. change interval.....other than when water pump begins to rattle?

I tend to go by the factory 90k or 5 years. The belt may still be decent but the idler bearings are usually starting to leak grease and get rough by then. On the trucks with pink coolant the pump is almost always leaking by 90k. At least in the East coast trucks we see.

Great video man. The first video was good but this video puts the process into perspective. Looking forward to the part 2. Perfect timing also. I will be doing this in the next couple months.

These videos are awesome. I watched before swapping mine out today. Cheers!

OTRAMM...do you recommend a specific timing belt/water pump kit...or do you just Buy all OEM parts from Toyota. Any advice is appreciated!
