I know there is not much for the 3FE but has anyone done any modifications or performance upgrade/changes that are worth a damm??

Or is there a thread already about this?

I’ve done some research and people seem to think a snorkel helps a little bit but besides that there isn’t anything that does much besides getting into the motor.

also some people report better running after de-smog but some don’t.

There's probably 100 threads about this, but this one is the most logical place to start.
General 3FE Tune Up Info

From my experience with FJ62s... off the top of my head..

Non-invasive: a good tune up, bump the timing as your fuel and engine allow, make sure throttle cable and transmission throttle cable are adjusted properly so you get fully open throttle and you can hold gears to 3500+ rpm, I'm thinking avoiding ethanol tainted gas helps some...

Invasive: the head benefits from cleaning up the cast to machined interface behind the valve seats, mill the head for bumped compression, regrind the cam to a more aggressive profile, stroke the engine by swapping out the bottom end for a 2F, add a turbo and aftermarket engine control....

So slow it doesn't matter really IMHO

I have a 3fe and in a perfect world I'd regear to 4:88. Other than that just normal tune up stuff.

The nice ting about the 3fe is if cared for it seems very reliable.

33s and 4.88 is pretty perfect for a 3FE equipped 80. More get up and go off the line and easier to maintain speed on the highway.
3FEs will last for a while even if neglected, but so will a 1FZ-FE. The difference is the 3FE just doesn't care as much.

I'm on 33" skinny tires, and 4.88's on my 91 3fe. I agree, it's a good setup.

The tuneup thread jonheld mentioned above is definitely the best place to start. Adjusting your valves, and ensuring your timing is correct seem to make the most difference.

Re-gearing is in the works on mine. Has anybody done and porting/polishing on intake manifold and exhaust manifold and gotten good results?

I have heard West Coast Cruisers offers a transmission performance valve body. Anybody confirm this?

Cruiser Brothers is the current distributor for the Wholesale Automatics products.

Yes, the head offers opportunities to clean up air flow, though the manifolds themselves not so much.

Thanks, Doc. Yes, we have the Wholesale Automatic Transmissions line in stock, even bringing in full HD rebuilt transmissions. We support all Toyota automatics with a full range of HD Nomad valve bodies, Gen III torque converter lock up kits, billet torque converters and "built" transmissions. Popular models: A440F, A442F, A343F, A750F, A760F, AB60F. Sorry, nothing for the 8 speeds as yet, but good support for the diesels.

See the attached document for a quick introduction of the HD Nomad VB kit. $1,295 plus core charge. Here is a taste - Rodney, Stuart and the crew at WAT are great partners for us. Georg Esterer @orangefj45 and I spent a couple days with Rocket Rod in Melbourne in February. Great fella, crew and products.

5.29's with 35's allowed me to hold reasonable hwy speeds at elevation again.

A higher flowing exhaust from the cats back opened it up and little as well.

Anyone know if you can mate an A750f behind a 3FE and run a split T-case? I get there has been little discussion about these options, but I’ve got an FJ62, and would like to keep my t case while getting more hearing options on and off road

i have a 91, proper tune up, regear to 4.88, 37s seems to run even better than 35s and my speedo error is dead on with my GPS reading, also advance timing seems to wake the turtle up...enough that i no longer complain about speed and still be able to do 75-80mph comfortably. Zero complaints here and dead reliable too.

Just running 33s with mine and stock gearing, but with the advice above (i.e. ensuring proper tune) I have absolutely no complaints. Also, a de smog is worth the effort and, at this age, the kickdown cable needs some adjustment (which definitely helped mine).
