Looking to get an idea of parts availability and rebuild prices on the 3b (total rebuild) and or a used 3b motor.

Thanks.

Plan on $3500CAD for a complete rebuild. new water pump, fluids, injectors, machining etc.

I did one a few years back and was right around 3300. My brother did one this summer and hit 3800....

A used 13B-T might of been a better choice for him.

You can buy a complete rebuild kit from 4wheelauto.com out of Edmonton Alta for $ 1350.00. Get the head shaved and valves done and new injector nozzels. If you do it your self should be less than 2000.00. Cheaper than a small block Chev.

yup, then add new OEM head gasket, oil pump rebuild, thermostat, etc... There is NO way I could do a complete rebuild for $2000CAD

you can get the same rebuild kit out of Goeff Walsh in Oz for about $900CAD landed at your door (the last time I got one)

Dude:

Was Geoff's kit of good quality?

Yes, except for the head gasket. Go with OEM. I also purchased a high nickle head from them complete with precups. It was a while ago but I think it was just over $1000.

I am sure it is close to the kit from 4 wheel auto (if not the same)

The whole kit plus the head for 1000.00 can?

Did you do the teardown your self? Is this a complete rebuild or top end only?

Dude:

I was quoted 2380.00 us (labor only) by a reputable diesel shop here in town. GW's kit is about 750.00 US according to your quote so, that matches about right with the 3800.00 Can.

Are the 3b's sleeved or non sleeved cylinders? Is it necessary to remove the engine for cylinder work?

They are sleeved and I have only ever worked on the engine out of the truck. For me that was about the easiest part of the job. On a 60 we can do it in a couple of hours. On a 42 even quicker.

Nope, just the the head was0010

NOT all 3B's are sleeved, contrary to popular opinion. They are simply bored starting in '88 I think (3B-II). I found that out when looking for the rebuild kit from Geoff Walsh. There are several changes throughout the production run.

My personal preference would be a 5 bearing cam and sleeved block ('85 - '86 or so).

I concur with the rebuild costs quoted above if you do the actual assembly.

I did a rebuild last year. I did all of the work myself (with friends helping) except for machining. Total cost; $3200 Cdn.

Machining: $770
Rebuild kit from Australia: $840 to my door (yes, it's the exact same as 4 wheel auto)
Pre-cups: $430
Fluids: $100
Injectors: $160
Extra Toyota OEM parts: $945

The extra Toyota parts are:
Head Gasket
Front & Rear Main Seal
Oil Pump Gears
Oil Pump Relief Valve and Spring
Thermostat w/ gasket
Oil Cooler Gasket
Clutch
Pressure Plate
Clutch Bearings
Injector Gaskets & seats

Unless you have a machine shop, or elect not to do replace any of the above parts you can't do it any cheaper. I got a deal on machining and a deal on the Toyota parts.

I am very happy with the results. I went from 18 mpg to 26-30 mpg and WAY more power...relatively speaking (it IS a Landcruiser afterall).

Now with 20K under it's belt, the turbo will be going on hopefully by Easter. My only advice would be to turbo it while the engine is out, WAY EASIER.

HTH,
Craig.

I buy my rebuild kits from another manufacturer in Austrailia name of Engine Australia.

The kits seem to be of a higher quality than the G Walsh kits IMOP.

what makes the kit a "higher quality"? factory spec head gasket?

>Lumpy, how many km's on the old engine before rebuild?

I got the truck at 386,000 kms, and had it rebuilt at 394,000 kms. Old compression was 300, 290, 290, 280 lbs. When we broke the engine down we figured it was a long life of cold starts, possibly poor oil changing maintenance, and extended periods of idling which had glazed the cylindar walls. Now I'm at 420 lbs across the board and I'm told it's still breaking in.

Lumpy:

Have any part numbers on those Toyota parts?

Thanks guys for the info. I have rebuilt a couple of engines but I do not do machining nor have I ever worked with a diesel. I am mechanically inclined and have a lot of patience so I find that takes a great way into getting these done in a vehicle.

Just curious, for those that have rebuilt petrols, which rebuild is easier? Same? The machine shop put it at 35 hours of labor to do the rebuild. Sound right? I would pull the engine because, well, that is the only way in my opinion.

Thanks fellows.

Jukelemon, where are you located? I could dig up the part numbers if you really needed them, but any Toyota dealer in Canada can get those parts.

I am also mechanically inclined but had never rebuilt an engine. I was amazed at the simplicity of the 3B. With the Field Service Manual and a couple of friends who pointed me in the right direction at times, it was remarkably easy.

As for machining, 35 hours is crazy. Looking at my receipt, I got mine done in 18 hours. Try to find a shop that has done one before as the machinist's familiarity made it cheaper and gave me piece of mind. He also might want some photocopied pages from the FSM for torque speques and the like for reference (my guy wanted the torque specs for the rods for example, and had forgotten the exact number).

Craig.

This is all coming in pretty close to the rought guide of $1000.00 cdn per hole for a deep rebuild.
