Hello Everyone,

I went and looked at to early 80's Canadian BJ60's yesterday, and am looking for some advice

One BJ60 had an engine in good condition, but a completely rotton body. I have no experience in body work and do not want to take on that project.

The second BJ60 had a reletivly good frame and body, but the engine is in an unknown condition. Apperently there was an oil leak on one of the lines to the alternator/vacume pump, and the original owner continued to drive the car on low oil until a "knock" developed. I do not know how long he drove with this knock. The engine has never been opened up to investigate the damage.

Does anyone have experience with something like this? What are the potential problems that i might encounter? what are the chances the engine will need to be completely pulled, or is it possible i could do all the work by removing the head and oil pan?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like he ran it out of oil. The oil feed line to the vacuum pump often fails over time. If it developed a "knock" I'd be very concerned that the crankshaft has been severely damaged. Not all crankshafts can be salvaged if someone drove for a long period of time with rod knock. Fixing that involves disassembling most of the engine to machine or replace the crankshaft and connecting rod and it cannot be done in the truck. If you can get them both cheap enough make a good one out if the two.

So weird to here this issue, those BJ60s came with a low oil pressure shut down to protect the engine in case of oil loss through hole in pan or lines? Engine knock on a 3B would keep me from buying.

Thanks for advice Gerg, and Cruiserman. I could not get much information from the owner on when exactly the original owner stopped running the engine. I was told that the bearings did not spin, but im not sure how he knows that. Could the knocking noise just be valve noise with low oil?

If the engine was only run till the low oil pressure switch shut the car off, what kind of damage would I expect. The engine has around 350,000km.

I thought of that too but if the EDIC malfunctioned it would be within reason to disable it and loose the low oil pressure shut off. I've done it in the past.

I'd negotiate from the position that it's a nice parts truck. Unless your well versed in tearing a 3B apart and have access to parts I wouldn't entertain the idea that this is a minor thing. I have tons of parts and do this for fun and I'd consider it a parts engine. It's not worth the cost to take it apart and fixit when a running engine is 1/4 of the cost. Depending where you are of course. Unless you intend to rebuild it completely talking an old engine apart and fixing it with used parts to save money taking you like 35hrs labor, it would make more sence to get a running used engine and swap it for 10hrs labor. A running used engine tells you something as well right off the bat. It runs. If someone cant show it running properly right in front if me I consider it good for parts and go from there.

If there is new silicone on the oil pan ask him if he replaced the bearings. Chucking new bearings in on a bad crank can work for a while but it will eat the bearings fast. If I were an unscrupulous seller that is exactly what I would do.

I have seen a oil pan pushed up enough to make contact with the crank once.?

Id consider it a running rebuildable engine but thats just me. Is the 60 the Blue one for sale here?

Gerg, I could contact the owner and find out if he knows if the EDIC was modified at all. I did notice in the cab that what i am assuming is a wilson switch was installed, so its not out of the question that some other modifications were made.

Varty Yo, thanks... i had just convinced myself that i should no longer be considering this project... and now im back to a maybe.

So without looking at it id have to say that looks a lot like a 500$ parts truck. Wear a mask if you sit in it. I can guarantee its full of mold. Don't turn on the fans.
cheers

@gerg I didnt see any mold, but it was full of mouse droppings. No batteries so i couldnt check the electrical system at all. I really appreciate all the help everyone! I have found another BJ60 in BC that i am looking into now, only issue with it (aside from the rusted out frame) is that it has to pass an Alberta out of province inspection.

Cheers,
Ursus Arctos

Mouse droppings are even better. Never vacuum rodent feces as the vacuum will aerosolize a virus they carry called hanta virus. Fatal. Killed a Lady in BC a while back, plus it smells bad.....the feces that is.

Yeah Hanta Virus is scary! I remember there being something about an entire family dieing after cleaning there garage out in Calgary.

Hey guys. Just gonna reopen this. Ive also been thinking about buying that landcruiser for myself but with the intention of rebuilding the motor. Anyone know what the cost of a new crank would be? If it were necessary.

You can find better rebuildable 3B engine. I know of one that will be available soon. It actually has driven down to the rubicon twice in the last 5 years. Let me know ill contact the owner to see where he is at with hit 1HZ swap.

Complete vehicle or the motor? Thing is i need the whole thing

A new one from Toyota japan is $2533USD on megazip. Part number 13401-58010, late model 3B 1982-84
I would look for a good used one or a complete better rebuildable engine
