I bought trans and -case off some guy a while back claiming it came out of an 85 with the better split case, but how can one be certain? Is there anyway to tell? And is there really that much difference in early split cases vs. later ones?
If it's from 85 cruiser, it might 34mm.
Depending on cruiser's production date, 80/8~86/4 have 34mm, 86/4~90/1 have 38mm.
I can't tell about differenct because I have no experiedce with t-case which have 34mm idler shaft.
Other member could tell about this.
Measure the idler shaft that sticks out the back of the transfer case, you should be able to get a set of calipers on it. 34mm is the early case, 38mm is the later.
Does it have an ~4" cast adapter/spacer between the actual transmission & transfer case?
There are some differences between the 34 & 34, gear ratio, bearing use, etc...

That makes it the "fake" H55F, basically identical dimensions and shape as the H55F, just no 5th gear setup in that cast spacer. It is a great tranny/trxfr to use in a build up if you plan to add the H55F in the future, that way your drivelines, crossmembers, etc are all 100% setup. As for using it with no intentions of adding the H55F, not ideal in all situations. In a 40 it will give you an even shorter rear driveline, making Toybox's, etc. a difficult addition. If you do plan to use it in a SWB build up, just find a 19 spling H42 without the cast spacer and bolt it right up to the split-case... My .02
