12.5 not so fun with manual steering. 10.5 is also narrow enough to not require trimming the tub if you're not lifted high.

tire size

keeping the tires inside will help keep from throwing road grime and mud down the sides.

The look is more appropriate to the age of the vehicle

Many people argue that traction is as good or better with the skinny tires

I have heard of tire places refusing to install too wide a tire on a skinny rim

Did I say the 10.5's look really cool?:grinpimp::grinpimp:

backspacing

If not too late Summit Racing offers the white spoke using original backspacing. They are made to order and have a letter at the end of the part number that identifies them as a custom order---the great thing is that they are still "cheap as chips!"

33 X 10.5's are just about ideal on a 40 with a small lift.

They fit much better, less stress on steering, less weight, and, in most situations, better traction (smaller section = more pressure on contact patch).

...but most people go for the 33 X 12.5 for the "big tire look..."

...and, they just don't look right on a 40. The proportion is too short and fat. They look like sideways marshmallows... or hoopty reverse rims.

If you want 12.5's, go for (at least) 35's... or get some spinners and a coffee can exhaust to complete the look

Hi All:

For a street/highway rig the 10.5 on eight inch wide rims is O.K.

For a 'wheeler that wheel is too wide for that tire. For a 10.5 I'd say go with a six to seven-inch wide rim. Eight inch wide wheels are fine for the 12.5 inch tires; ten inch wide rims are reserved for like 13.5 to 15.5 wide tires!

Alan

33x10.5x15s it is. Ordered them today. Thanks for the input. BTW, the only white spoke steelie wheels I could find have 3.75" backspace. Will that be a problem?

Thanks,

So, running on stock FJ40 suspension/wheels, what's the maximum size one can go to in this type of tire, get the tall/skinny look and guarantee good practical, all-round performance with no rubbing, etc.?

I believe Cruiser Solutions has white spoke wheels for sale with 3.50" back-spacing.

This was the kind of thread I was hoping would come along. Thanks for all the input. I'm looking to replace my white spokes and get new tires. Would the 10.5's fit on a stock saggy-assed 40 without a lift? Also what are people's experience with the 10.5's in soft sand?
