3 part paint, which goes first...?

Long range plans for my new to me FJ62 include a paint job, at this point I'm leaning towards a white roof, dark green/olive upper body in either flat or satin and a bedliner lower body following the somewhat natural lines on the fenders etc.

Before I do the upper body and roof I'm going to need to pull the windshield to do some pretty minor rust repairs that are under the rubber lining.

Is there any reason I can't do the bedliner part first?

It seems more intuitive to paint the body first and then do the bedliner over the color but I'm also thinking that I need to scuff up the finish to get the bedliner to adhere better so why bother painting it just to scuff it up again?

Am I making any sense here?

My theoretical plan is to finish up some minor rust and rough spots on the lower body, roll on the bedliner, finish de-chroming the rest of it, then fix the windshield rust, paint the upper body and then the roof.

I'm going to do a roll-on or I might try a spray gun Rustoleum job on the roof and upper body.

Obviously it's not going to be a show car of any sorts, the current paint is all there it just doesn't look very good.

I'm going to be blacking out the grille and headlight surrounds as well.

do the bedliner last otherwise you will get overspay under the tape onto the bedliner. you dont need to scruff the paint before putting on the bedliner just dont paint it where the bedliner goes

You can do the bedliner first. Just mask everything off properly.

You definitely want to scuff the paint before applying the bedliner. I can't think of any paints, primers, or liners that should be sprayed over a smooth painted surface unless they're done within a very short period of time (recoat window).

you can do the bedliner first or last makes no differance but if you do it first you wont get the tape to lay flat and some paint spray will get under the tape.

as far as the surface goes yes it would be better to scuff but no need to paint where the liner is going to be applied

as you can see i did not paint where the bedliner goes
