Alright, well nothing I tried seemed to work. Looked at your picture Dave and come to find out, my holder (that I have circled) is pointing down???? I dont know the name of it, but yours is pointed up?

So, I took the Z bracket and drilled another hole in it and mounted it to the upside down bracket and then it worked just fine....hated to do that:bang:, but I am out of ideas. Had to rebuild the slave so I had all of the parts on the table, and the measurements just would not calculate properly to set it up like you have it. I am still needing the pin/bolt that holds them together though.

Yes, that hole is pointing down in my picture, too, which is shot from underneath. It's correct, and I have no idea what it is for since none of my engines use it.

I can tell you're still confused.

Maybe these pictures will help (yet another engine). It is the two top empty holes (Z bracket and the one behind it) that mount the clutch slave. The front hole, on the Z bracket is the pivot point for the boomerang/bell crank, and doubles as the front bolt for the clutch slave.

......................and just like that, i get it.

THANKS DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!That picture is perfect. Answers my question directly.

now, how about that carrier bolt? Did you locate one yet?

Yep, have a bolt for you. Now, does your boomerang/bell crank have the bronze bushing in it or not?

yes it does have the bronze bushing. I checked just to make sure ;).

To add some confusion to this thread, but it made me understand this whole deal.

On my 4/73, which was one of the early years for the floor shift, the slave attaches in the same way, which always threw me off, as it seems like a really weird mount for such an important part, when Toyota could have added more ears to the engine mount for it. I never realized the column linkage used that rear hole as a pivot point.

What is interesting however, is the Z bracket pictured above, on mine is made of lighter steel, and the upper hole is threaded. Without the need for a pass through bolt, you simply thread the bolt right into it. But it was retained to hold the slave, even without the need for the boomerang bracket.

So for those of you setting up the column shift, you would need the older Z bracket from the correct vintage, as newer floor shift F/3 Speed combo Z brackets will not work like this one pictured above due to the threaded hole.

That's interesting that your's is that way. The Z bracket on this F.5 engine ('74) is not threaded. The Pivot fits just fine.

Maybe I am imagining things, but I know I have never had to back a nut on that bolt. Just zip em out and the slave comes off.

I'll recheck tonight.

So .... where did you get the adaptor for the stern drive? I think you need a bigger prop to take advantage of the torque that engine delivers.... :D

I just use it for short river crossings. A bigger prop would hang up on rocks. :hillbilly:
