Hey guys,

I was doing some research on the OEM starters for the 100 series. I notice failures are more common pre-2003 on the forum. Has anyone put a 2003 remanufactured starter on a 98-02? It looks like the only change was the magnetic starter switch p/n according to:

I also learned there is a 3rd starter for the 2005+. It has an updated p/n's for the clutch sub assembly as well as magnetic starter switch yet again.

I wanted to get some feedback on any failures for these 3 different starters:

28100-50070
28100-50100
28100-50101

Is it possible to put a revised 03 or 05 starter to the more failure prone 98-02's?
 
Bump. Does anyone know if the starters are interchangeable?

why didnt you ask this question last week? I just bought two denso remanufactured units off ebay. First one was cheap but plastic was broken on it. The other is being installed tomorrow.
 
So what are the differences? In guessing the part number diagrams just use a common image?
 
One major difference is that Toyota no longer supports a "rebuilding" of the terminals and plunger on the last iteration for the 100 series. Basically, if it craps out, you replace the entire assy.

That said, yes, the pics are reasonably generic with no indication of what might have changed externally/internally.

Part number changes don't always mean any significant change has occurred to the part. It could be merely a change of supplier or sub-component supplier.
 
I found this below from a 2010 thread. He installed the newest starter supposedly.


Old (OE for 2000/03 UJZ100)
Red metallic sticker
"Toyota 28100-50070
228000-7393
12V (then some date code stamped)
Denso Japan"

New
Green metallic sticker
"Toyota 28100-50101
228000-8812
12V (d/c stamp)
Denso Japan"

Had a little bit extra plastic insulator behind/around the terminal posts, but otherwise same dimensions.

3 hours + break for lunch.
 
My 2000 LX 470 had a new starter installed by the dealer ($1122) in 2012 just 3 years and 50k miles ago and the solenoids seem to be worn out again!!! I'm freaking pissed off that Toyota can't put a starter on that will last as long as any other vehicle I've owned.

I'm considering replacing the starter with a different brand than the Denso one in it. This will be the third starter in 15 years and 211k miles. To me a starter should last more than that. Oh, thanks for letting me vent!
 
Thread revival. So just to confirm, all 3 starters are interchangeable among the 100 series platform?

Any real world confirmation that the later model 100 series starters will fit a 98-02?

Based on other threads, there is a 1.4Kw starter, and a 2.0Kw starter "cold spec". Anyone know which part number is the stronger 2.0Kw starter?
 
This is per partsouq based on my 2006 VIN, which lists as 2.0KW:

2810050101STARTER ASSY281002UZFE..UZJ100 12V 2.0KW0105.2005 - ...
 
Do we have 100% confirmation that these are all interchangeable? I’m about to do the starter on my 99…
 
Based on parts numbers, diagrams, wire housing and installs. I'm reasonable certain, they all are the same 2.0KW. All will work in the 4.7L.

All parts suppliers sub to the newer 28100-50101 starter, for all years. Which has different size contacts, OEM not sold separately. In those newer starter, Toyota sell the whole "SWITCH ASSY, MAGNET STARTER" which houses contacts, plunger and gears. Cost is about the same or more, as a remanufactures Denso starter. Aftermarket contacts & plunger, are available for them.

The older 28100-50100, we can buy OEM contacts & plunger. It's has more parts available, so more readily rebuildable. These are found in 98-02, verified by part number on them.

No USA suppliers sell new OEM starter. They're all -84, which denotes remanufactured.

Denso remanufactured starter. Rebuilder has discretion on what parts replaced.
Toyota Denso remanufactured starter. Rebuilder must replace parts specified by Toyota, at minimum.

Best practice:
Reseat all remanufacture contacts.
