Should look even better when I get the paint on tonight :D

Matt, how is your paint booth constructed? It seems to get lots of use and work very well.

Is that primer black?

Primer is black. PPG's line of epoxy primers comes in different colors, the # in the middle stands for the color. DP90LF is black, I use DP50LF on the body..which is gray.

I like to use the color of primer when I spray things that are tough to spray with lots of angles, holes, nooks and cranny's. When I spray the primer I'm able to stick the gun into all the holes and soak it on good and not worry about runs. When I spray the paint, it is a lot easier to run....so I can stick it in the holes and let'r rip. The coats have to be even and uniform.

So, any areas I miss and don't get a lot of paint into (like the inside of the frame), it still is black in there. In the end, it will be highgloss black and look extremely nice.

Got home after work this evening and got a couple hours in on the lpb......now highgloss black.

Doesn't look a lot different in the pics, but it now has a couple coats of single stage ureathane on it. Not a lot to say, pics pretty much say it all, turned out good.

Hoping to get it out of the booth tomorrow and get something else in there hung up and painted. Thinking either rims or rear springs...not sure yet.

matt, just curious what do you do with the tiny area that you can't get paint to because of the eyebolts or similar apparatus when you hang stuff?

Usually touch it up with a brush or spray bomb. 5/16" flat washer on the back side of those eye bolts, so didn't miss much.

Matt, did you ever consider turning the frame on its side so paint could sink/penetrate down into the cracks between the inner and outer frame pieces? It seems like that would be the first place rust would come from bc it is not open and has not been covered with paint so rust will from, but will it spread? I guess you could seam seal it, but that would look factory. I realize, this thing will never rust much in our life time, but when you go to the trouble to restore these things you tend to think of crap like that. :) What are your thoughts? Oh, by the way, the frame looks great. ;)

You just never stop with the projects...no phone calls from the Discovery channel yet? You might have already answered this earlier on in the thread and I missed it but why did you paint this one instead of powder coat?

I hosed on the primer on the inside of the frame rails where it was running out between the 2 halves in places....so as far as primer is concerned, I got a fair amount penetrated in between there. As far as doing that with paint, you just don't shoot paint like that. Even uniform coats, really the only way to do it. You can get away with that with primer because it dries quick and any runs you can sand out before the top coat.

I think your only other option for absolute coverage would be to seperate the frame halves, blast, prime and paint......and that ain't going to happen in my life time. I just don't want to work that hard, it would be a major pain in the ass to do something like that.

I think you need to ask yourself, "where do you draw the line?" Anything can be done of course, you could have it dipped and galvanized....how much time and money do you want to spend?? I think sandblasting a solid frame and trying to get the blasting tip in every hole you can does a pretty good job. And then turning the pattern down on the gun and hosing epoxy primer in hole you can....more than the factory did? I'm thinking it should outlast me..and if it doesn't, I'll fix it 30 to 40 years ;)

No calls from the Discovery channel yet, but I ain't holding my breath either ;)

Lot a talented people in this world, I'm sure they can find some better goobers than me :) I'd also want my sponsors to be either Harbor freight or Northern Tool....or any other Ho chi mien tool company out there. From all the Nascar shops I've seen on those shows on TV.......I don't think I would fit there profile ;p

Basic construction, 2x6 walls, full 8ft studs. Roof is 2 x10's - 2 ft o.c. across the top. 16' x 26' I think? Sheeted on the inside with 7/16" osb, 3 to 4 coats of Ace high gloss porch and floor enamael. 12 - 8ft florencent light fixtures, 24 bulbs total. 6700 belt driven exhaust fan. 24 square ft. filtered intake air. 4 - 8ft electric base board heaters. I have a 50 amp breaker running to another sub panel on the side of the booth with 2 - two pole 20 amp breakers that run 2 - 8ft heaters each. I have a 110 volt remote probe thermostat, probe is on the inside of the booth, thermostat is on the outside. It is contected to the breakers/heaters by 110 volt relay's. When it hits the desired temp, relays open up.

It has served me well for many years now, lot of junk has been painted in there with excellent results. I think the biggest thing is having an area to make a mess specificly for painting. Something that is enclosed, stays clean and vents the overspray well. I kinda modeled mine after the fancy boy stuff and then took the low buck route ;)

Hope this helps, Matt

Man, so jealous of that set up! Was rattle caning the roll cage with metallic silver hammerite (redneck OEM pewter!) for the troopy on the driveway tonight by handheld flouro lamp in a howling gale! Had fun though which is the main thing! Your threads are awesome.

Got about 1 hour in on the lpb tonight. Had to bring my dog to the vet tonight, so that took a couple hours out of the evening......found out she had Lyme disease, so had to get her started on some antibiotics.

Anyway, got home and hung up those freshly blasted 16" split rims and rings. Blew everything off, tacked clothed and sprayed a couple good coats of DP50LF on them.

I was going to base clear them with Darin's code but, the more I got to looking the DP50LF was pretty much the color I wanted. So, instead of spraying a color coat and clearing.....I am going to get up before work tomorrow morning and shoot a couple coats of 2021 clear on them. Called my autobody buddy on this one and he said he has did it many times, especially with black primer. He said the color coat with base/clear applications essentially does nothing but give it a color, provides no protection of any kind, the clear does.

So, tomorrow morning....the rims become high gloss grey. If they are dry tomorrow evening, hoping to get them out of the booth and hang up the rear springs. There in 16 pieces right now, want to prime and paint the springs and then get them back together.

Matt, how did you calc. the amount of air flow you needed? is is based on what the fan pulls? also, are the lights just regular lights? i thought that lights in paint booths had to be explosion proof?

I calculated the amount of airflow by a friend of mine who built a paint booth. His fan pulled about 4500 cfm and I thought it was just a tad small. So, sourced this 6700 cfm fan and it was a 2 spd. So I knew if it was to much on high I could slow it down. I run it on high about 70% of the time and low speed for smaller jobs, I think it works perfect.

Lights are just regular 8ft flourecent lights, buy them at any home center or hardware store. Explosion proof...yes, I imagine if I had a comercial body shop I am doing business out of....I suppose someone might care, but I doubt it. I'm also not doing business out of mine, just a hobby....and I don't see myself blowing up anytime soon. I did mount my thermostat on the outside of the booth, that breaks one of the legs on the heaters. I just didn't want that relay clicking on and off inside the booth, it's a hell of snap when it goes on and off.

About 1 hour this morning at 6 am before work.

2 coats of DCU2021 clear over the top of DP50LF primer.
