NOW THAT IS A F****ING 80!!!

Im very jealous if you can't tell

Very Nice swap....I wish toyota still built the 80.....or atleast sold it here longer than they did.

Just what an 80 needed. A "factory" V8.

Very impressive. What would you say your total investment was for the swap?

x2

How complicated was the wiring ? is everything working like the tach, speedo, all gauges?

nice... is every thing functional now... 4 wheel drive, a/c, guages...?

A/C not working yet, I have to make some custom lines.

Tach does not work yet, I have not looked into it yet.

Temp guage does not work, I have to add a sensor in the front water pipe. This motor uses a single sensor and the ECU sends out a digital or PWM signal.

Everything else works, but I do not have the front driveline on. When I measured the lengths, I did not have a final position yet and the front is about 2" too short and front is 2" too long. Rather than get them fixed, I will be adding a lift and re-legthen the rear.

I will total up prices a little later.

Wiring was pretty difficult, but once I figured out what needed to be hooked up, it was just time consuming to solder everything and keeping it modular. I did not cut into either factory harnesses at all. I pretty much made a fields harness that connects the two together. This makes troubleshooting a little eaiser if there were to be a problem.

I'm in awe. I'd be ecstatic to just have carbureted SBC in mine, and I haven't even gotten up the courage to tackle THAT job.......much less a factory fuel injected, drive-by-wire 2UZ AND a Toyota 5-speed automatic...........again, I'm in awe!

If you would be willing to come up with a "kit" for this retrofit (with detailed instructions), I'd bet you could make enough money to make it worth your while.....there are enough of us who love our vastly underpowered 80s to believe that many of us would attempt something like this with enough parts availability and guidance.

Just a thought..........

very impressive :steer:!!!!, any preliminary mpg readings. from the videos sounds like you are running minus a muffler. more details

Thanks guys. Lot of long hours went into this. I stopped keeping track after about 150.

Full muffler. 2 1/2" mandrel bent with dual flowmasters and an x-pipe. It is actually pretty quiet when you are just cruising at light throttle. You don't need to get on it very much at all to get up to speed.

MPG, I dunno yet, I am having a hard time staying out of the gas. I will try to be nice to it next week and get a good 50/50 city/highway reading.

Kit, yeah, maybe. R&D would really take some time. I like doing on-offs, prototype stuff and then never do another one again, so you most likely won 't see much of a kit coming from me.

If there were a kit, it would pretty much be

custom crossmember
custom engine mounts
wiring adapter
could modified shift linkages
modified exhaust manifold

The wiring adapter would be the most difficult thing, but that would be for the drive-by-wire. non-vvti would be MUCH simpler.

I would say I am into it about 4000-4500 in parts alone, and that was some good deals on stuff.

A 2005 motor and transmission with wiring and ECU is going to cost around 3500-4000 by itself.

Then you have headers, and full exhaust system, that was close to $1000 just in parts.

If I were to charge someone even $30 an hour(cheap rate for custom fab) the cost in labor would have been probably over $5,000. Of course if I were to do another it would not take me even half the time.

I thought the main pride are the wirring .. make a custom wirring or adapters .. would make you ready to sell it ..

Motor mounts and cross members have no sice to do .. but wirring will ...

Edit: forget the most importan part of this post .. Congrats ! it sounds, looks and run like a charm ..

....and it shows! Great looking retrofit!

Gas mileage would be nice, but the performance is what's got my attention..........

Like so many automotive projects, the first time is what always takes the longest. Now that you've done one, you're the best candidate to make items that can be duplicated (i.e., kits) Take the knowledge you gained by doing the first project, make duplicate retrofit parts from that first effort, and offer those parts individually or as a kit for sale to those of us who don't have the time, knowledge, etc. to do what you did.....that's the capitalism at its best! Supply and demand

A non-vvti application would be fine by me! The easier you can make the retrofit process (bolt-on and detailed instructions), the more interested I'd be (and I'm confident others would feel the same way)......let us know when the parts will be available for sale and at what prices ;)

since there seems to be some complaints about the rear axle, I have now added the FF rear axle with locking diff. People really seem to be put out by the semi float.

Also a report and MPG

17.5 Combined
20mpg highway if you are nice

13mpg pulling a 2,000 lb trailer with a 3,000lb car

Being nice would be very hard for me... :hillbilly:

Hey, when are you gonna be at your shop next??

pretty much M-F 9-5 I will be within 3 minutes. So just give me a little lead time when you want to meat up.

Ok, I still need to get the AFM... I can bring those springs tonight if that's cool with ya.

EDIT: Wait, do you mean you're going to be at the shop tonight? Or within 3 minutes of 9-5?

You have no idea how jealous I am. 17mpg is incredible.

You've probably already answered this before but the engine and tranny mounts, were those custom made or did everything just kind of fit?
