2UZ swap into my 78 '40

That will be a nice way to go. That way you can use the sturdier 60/62 case. The hard part may be finding the ECM for a manual version of the 2UZ (at least here in the US).

I've looked into this extensively, the 2uz, like the 1uz, will run just fine on the stock ECU without the auto gearbox. I may have to produce a false park/neutral signal, to fool the ECU into thinking that it's in gear, but that's about it.

Congrats!! That was my original plan...2UZ/H55..but my pockets were not that deep!! Just didn't want to fool with dealing with them over there, although I did call them a couple times before I settled with what I got.

Haven't updated this thread in a while, not much really to say. Still ironing out small gremlins that pop up from time to time. Also started a new job, so little to no wrenching during the week!!

I did get everything plumbed and the bib re-assembled...looks like it is somewhat complete!! Need to roll her out of the garage today and check the fuel system again...had an o-ring let go on one of the injectors before I tore everything out and re-plumbed the fuel system. Everything from the pump forward is now stainless braid line and AN fittings. So, I HOPE, there are no problems today!

Will post a few pics up today to show some progress!! One day I will get to enjoy this thing. Guess they are right....good things come to those who wait!!

Alright, just got done checking and re-checking the fuel system. NO LEAKS!! Now I can move on to the other stuff that is pending. Like a successful startup and run!!

Seems as if the price of AT fluid is up...only place I can find it is at the local parts store....@ $7 a quart!!!! Seemingly that I need 13-15 quarts....will definitely have to save my pennies!! Unbelievable!!

Ok, so here are the pics I took today....

Took some pics of the sandwich adapter I am using for my oil cooler. Earl's makes some jam-up parts!! This thing is low profile, about 3/4" thick, which is what I needed since space is definitely limited up at the front frame.

Also included are pics of my Walboro 255 fuel pump and a shot of the front end buttoned up.

Still have to fab up the rear xfer mount, then it will be swapping out the rear axle with the hybrid that I have laying in the gee-rage! The more stuff off the floor means the closer I am to getting this thing done!!

More pics...

As you can see, after years of abuse, my front bib is cock-eyed! That is no optical illusion...it is just crooked! Will see if I can't make some adjustments to try and help it out some.

But then it only revs up to 4000 rpm max or something , IIRC ?

To clarify, the ECU may require a park/neutral signal to start and a drive signal to enable the engine to rev beyond the 4000 rpm mark when it's in normal operation. I haven't started to work through this completely yet, but now that I've got all the mechanical components needed, including a split transfer case and OEM parts to adapt the OEM park brake to the case, I'll start to work things out electrically.

IT LIVES!!! IT LIVES!! What a relief to hear this think crank over and run!! Once the ECU got what it was looking for in the 'parameters department', she idled like my Sequoia..roughly about 500-600 rpm!! Gave her a little gas and the pedal was responsive, so atleast I knew that wiring was working!!

Unknown what codes it is throwing, probably alot, given the amount of things I deleted from the harness. Until I can get it hooked up to an OBDII, I won't be able to narrow down anything that may be causing the motor any grief...as of yet, it seems to be happy.

Only problem I ran into was a coolant (water) leak, seems as if the PO had forgot to hook up the water bypass tube. Got it tore down last night and put it back together today. Will push her out into the sunlight tomorrow and fill the system and give it another go. Figured I would fill it with water in case I had to drain it...once it is good to go, will fill it 50/50 mix.

Major hurdle crossed!! Let's just hope I can keep her happy so I can move onto the long list of things to get done....xfer xmember and rear axle swap, just to name a couple!!

Might just post a short video of her running....that is if I can figure out how to post it on here....

Running, but not driving, opting to build the hybrid axle for it instead of running centered/offset for the street. Need to make transfer case support as well. Everything from here on out should be just building, most of the hard stuff is done. Waiting for time and funds...

As Bret eluded to, now in the process of fabbing up the rear xmember for the xfer case. As a matter of fact, just got back from the steel yard!! Have the templates made, now just need to cut them out and start to fabbing!

In all honesty, took a couple weekends off to take advantage of the nice weather and bass fish!! Can't beat the bass fishing in Florida!! Now back at it because I want to drive this thing! Still got a ways to go but with the engine running like it should, I think it may be downhill from here!!

Will post up the xmember pics as it evolves...think it will be non-eventful for most, but part of the info gathering for anyone looking to tackle this swap none-the-less.

I opted to utilize the FROR xfer case centerplate as a starting point. I could have easily bought the whole xmember but would have ended up chopping it up and re-configuring it to work with the 40 frame. Not to mention, this is far from a mini application.

I have cut out my vertical supports, 3/8", and will build outward from the xfer case. The vertical supports will stop roughly 1/2" from the inner frame rail, then transition to the horizontal mounting tabs.

Given the current height of my trans/xfer, the horizontal tabs will mount on top of the frame rail with a 3/4" rubber bushing (in the pic, that is my cardboard horizontal tab on top of the bushing). When it is all said and done with it should provide the horizontal/vertical support that will be needed.

Hope the pics make more sense than my current ramblings..will update as this thing progresses.

Finally was able to finish up my Xfer X-Member, think it turned out fantastic, given the amount of measuring, cutting, grinding, and tweaking that went into this thing.

Here are a few pics for your viewing pleasure. Once I got it cleaned up, I finished it off with 4 coats of Hammerite. Should hold up to some abuse until I pull it off and throw some expoxy on it!!

Will post up some pics of it installed. Now onto removing the OEM axle to make room for the hybrid! Finally, some forward progress.
