Thought I would throw this up here incase any have expressed interest or have thought of putting in a Toyota 4.7 iForce V8 into their beloved FJ40. I have chosen to remove my exsisting SBC conversion for this swap..mainly because I wanted more HP and more importantly, fuel injection. Yes, yes, yes...I know there could have been numerous avenues I could of walked with my exsisting powertrain to achieve this BUT why be like everyone else...not to mention...unless I am mistaken..I have not see a 2UZ swapped into a 40 as of yet.
I will not get too indepth nor will this be a 'build' thread..however, I have started a thread over on the North Florida Cruiserheads forum, where I am a member.
Here is some basic info...as it stands now, the motor and 4spd trans (A340E) are currently in the engine bay awaiting final adjustment/positioning for motor and trans x-member mounts. The drivetrain will consist of the following:
4.7V8/4spd trans/Marlin plate adapter/gear driven mini case. While I am on the subject..here are a few details concerning the drivetrain..
-Motor has been rebuilt..heads ported and polished
-Mini case has been entirely rebuilt and currently is sporting 4.70 gears and is twin-sticked..
-4spd trans is stock

As it stands now..there are only minor mods that need to be completed...
-Need to install an oil filter relocation kit
-factory x-member needs to be cutout/replaced due to the centered rear driveline
-Headers need to be 'tweaked' to clear the frame rails

There is 'plenty-o-room' for that 4.7 in the engine bay and have the room to run the factory clutch fan if I decide to do so. Oil pan looks to be a non-player..will depend on final engine placement..it is the rear mount pan if any are interested.

I will be running a cruiser hybrid rear axle setup and will install my exsisting Aussie locker back into the third member. Given the length of the drivetrain, there still will be plenty of driveshaft left in the rear.

Electronic wise...I will use the factory ECU to for engine/trans control and will wire it seperate from my factory cruiser harness for simplicity sake...and if I do have a problem..it will be it's own stand alone harness for easier problem diagnosis.

I am 100% positive I have left out details about this swap but like I said...this is only the prelim info concerning my swap. On a side note, the build will be slow given my current profession. I live and work in Iraq and am only home every 4 months or so for 30 days, so time is very valuable when I am home. Given the time spent with family and friends...bass fishing...a 4 month 'honey-do' list...leaves little time to tinker...but it will get finished.

Here are some teaser pics..

Well, trying to get settled back into work back in the sandbox. The only update to this thread is the fact that I got the mini-truck gear-driven transfer rebuilt with 4.70 gears and is now also twin-sticked.
That is all for now folks...hate not having something to tinker on but being over here provides the necessary fundage to continue with my obsession...is a vicious circle I tell you....

Interesting, I just bought a 2UZ for my '72 FJ40, it came out of a '02 Tundra so it has the front oil sump which I thought would not work well for clearing the front axle.

It sounds like your rear sump doesn't look like it will work?

He is still in the sandbox, hope to get motor mounts done next month. I think he has most of the electrics figured out.

Last time he was back we got the motor mounts done in between a few beers. Looks like it will barely clear the tranny pan, will likely have to adjust the oil pan a bit but it sets in there pretty nice. If the rear stays where it is at the belly is flat. Bummer to work on it a week or two every 6 months... I will see if I can find a pic of the mounts.

Please do! I'm very interested in this project!

The only one I took was of the pass side mount before he had to leave again.

It sits right on top of where the SBC mount was. We intend on tieing it into where the old mount is already welded to the frame. The transfer case mount should be close enough to the old rear crossmember mount left over from the propeller adapter that we may not have to cut and reweld it.

I have always thought if (when) I finally pull the trigger on a 40, this is the swap I want to do. Something about keeping it all Toyota just feels right.

I agree... I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do for the trans and t/c. I kind of want to do the stock 100 series automatic, but I'm worried it might be too long. Definitely doing an earlier model (without VVTi and drive-by-wire) when I do it.

After seeing a very similar engine in a buggy with the auto this should be pretty bad a$$. I only hope the mini-truck transfer case is up to the task.

We will need to adjust the power steering pump inlet because it is pretty close to the tube fender support. We may need to pull the exhaust flange in a little bit to make more room at the frame rail. The brake junction on the passenger side frame rail will be scooted back to move away from the exhaust. Other than that it looks pretty straight-forward. The engine really looks at home under the hood though.

Do you think there is enough belt contact on the fan pulley with the shortened accessory belt after the a/c compressor is removed?

I've ordered a shorter belt as well, someone had a gates belt part number posted up that is supposed to work (I think it's a 90's model Camaro belt) but I was looking at my 2UZ this afternoon and wasn't sure if it will have enough contact.

Where do you intend on placing your battery? Is there room in the engine bay you figure? I've found that others have place the battery in behind the driver's seat, I'd prefer to not have to do this.

The battery is currently under the drivers seat. I don't know if he will want to mess with the extra work to put it back under the hood. With the tube fenders it is pretty open under the hood, and I can't remember if there is an obvious easy spot to remount it up there or not.

With regard to the fan I hope there is enough contact to drive a clutch fan, if not I have a left over MK VIII to donate to the cause that will be more than enough to cool it.
