Hey guys,
I'm from the Gatineau/Ottawa area and I'm looking for 2nd row foldable seats, since my LJ70 was imported from Belgium by the previous owner and apparently they had to be taken out over there (by law). If you guys could tell me where to purchase them online or where you could find them in the area that would be great. Thanks

I have some from a BJ74 that I am not using.

They do not come with seat belts, and that may have been why they were removed (or for insurance classification).

i always hated the rear seats in the 70 series, no leg room at all.
mount a set of side mount fold up seats like this:

they are out of a BJ42. i made some alloy sheeting for replacing the cardboard crap. then i mounted the seats to that with modified rear supports that went to the floor.
they worked very well but i sold the BJ74.
for the short wheel base 70 i run the earlier one long 40 series seat in the rear on the side. perfect fit. you need to modify the mounts of course.
what i like is when you fold them up there is no storage space lost. with the factory rear seat folded up you still lose about 8" of depth.
thanks for the compliment.
cheers

Sweet

Crusher,

Nice work on the extra seating. I've been looking for folding seats but always find singles. Thought about just adding a single on each side but this way is much better.

Also, love the chopped doors. I took my top off for part of the summer last year but dogs didn't like the lack of back doors! Can I assume all 70 series rear doors are interchangeable?

Great rig,

Surly

yep, they are interchangable but what i would recommend is take a set of doors and cut the window section off. it works well and is the same as the ragtop doors.
i also made a drop gate with 6" deep storage compartment for the rear of the 70 covertibles but i had no interest so i drop the idea.
thanks for the compliment.
cheers

Ragtop?

I assumed they were chopped down doors. Were would one find a 'ragtop' kit for a BJ73?

My plan was to figure out rear doors, thanks to your photos that step is already in process, and then get an Industrial Upholsterer to sew me up a little bikini...

for the cruiser that is!

If there is something already on the market I'll look for it but kind of like the idea of having it custom made.

Thanks again for your help.

Surly

the bikini top in the first pic allows for use of the rear veiw mirror when installed with the cut design.
it is a custom made one, those that have installed it have been very happy. off in seconds and back on in a few more.

Im having the exact same problem, my FJ70 is rag toped and it originally came with the side facing seats which are a pain for anyone that wants to ride in the back. The previous owner put in some KIA seats which I hated, so i decided to take the rear seat out... it was tall, not wide enough and killed any posibility of storage space.

I was looking into the original 73 series back seats, that apparently fold and tuck away, plus they are clearly the right width. Those are commonly available here but if anyone has any other back seat possibilities i might willing to go creative!

I wanted something that gave me the posibility to carry 3 people in the back comfortably since most of my expeditions are a ways away from home. Also i wanted something that would tuck in next to the front seats to allow for some storage space and if possible, i wanted it to be rail mounted in order to have more leg room or trunk space in order to accomodate my trip needs.

Thanks for the ideas!
