2nd Gear Switch - Who uses that? Why? (1 Viewer)

So the only way to do it would be to upgrade the ECU if that is possible
That sucks

You still don't get it...pushing the button starts you off in 2nd. We still get third and overdrive while that button is pushed. When your ride is in 2nd, that's the only gear you've got. Do you understand now? :meh:

I understand that.
I can see where it would be a little easier than manually shifting, but I'm so used to it now..

not all 80 's have 2nd gear start my 94 will start in first then to second when the shifter is in 2nd gear
Can the button be added to my 94 is the question?
There was one thread I found about it and the same question never got answered.

wow, I thought I read somewhere that all 80's had it..

Man, I was just reading the Wiki article. how cool would it be to get an almost new 80?

2008 - Last 80-Series vehicle was built in Venezuela which was the only country producing the vehicles after production ended in Japan in 1997.

Great tip about using it in 4-Lo! I find that it is not very useful to me in 4Hi snow driving, but I'm usually pretty good about feathering the throttle on a slick start. The 80s have really nice low speed throttle control compared to other trucks, so if you can ease into the gas, you won't have a problem.

It's a great way to give less torque to the wheels. can also avoid a nasty gear change at the wrong time. I mainly offroad in the sand, and I only use 1st when I'm dragging someone else out. I find that it wants to dig in when I use 1st in really loose sand. I also use it when I'm taking off in really slick mud, (not deep enough to get stuck, just real slippery stuff).

I really didn't realize that all the 80's didn't have it, can someone post up the year/trans model that has this feature?
I think my '91 has the A440 right? so I guess you would call it a manual 2nd gear start since I need to put the truck into 2nd to prevent it from starting in 1st.

Funny thing. my '03 s10 pickup will still shift 2 second if you have the trans in 1st, it just waits a long, long time and the rev limiter kicks in before it shifts..

The 2nd gear start button showed up in 1995 when 80's got the A343F transmission.

And is this right?
91 & 92 had the A440 (with manual 2nd gear start)
93 & 94 had the A442 (same as 440 but electronically controlled without manual 2nd gear start?)

I forgot to plug my switch back in the last time I put the plastic shifter surround back on. Spent a whole week in Utah getting whip-lashed shifting from 1st to 2nd in 4Lo.

I would definitely add it if it were possible to my 91!!!

My JDM built in 11/96 comes with A442F ECT and 2nd start.

I found a use for it the other day while crawling in traffic. I pushed the second start button and shifted into 2nd--then the transmission didn't have to keep shifting up and down with the starts and stops on the freeway. I'm not sure it was that beneficial for the transmission, it but it made me think so. I also felt half an IQ point smarter.

in the name of fuel economy

Most of my driving is in the city so I've been using the 2nd start as a fuel saving measure. Anybody see any negatives to using it more often than not?

so if you don't push the button and manually shift to second it starts in first right?

(still getting my head around it...)

You do realise that now you have to be the guinea pig for this mod ;)

I'd like a second start button in my cruiser. Personally i've found the moving from slow spot to slow spot the most annoying aspect of automatic transmission ownership.

The only thing I could see would be a problem with that approach would be more slippage before the torque converter locks up creating more heat and wear on the clutch packs than would be normal.

OTOH if you are easy on the skinny pedal, the extra slip may not generate a bunch of heat. :meh:

Correct!

I wouldn't recommend it for high range starts. Unnecessary wear on the transmission. This would generate too much slip. I don't think there would be any mileage advantage to not using first gear. You're going to use more load on the engine (vacuum) to accelerate, which would negate any gearing improvement.

I Agree.
It's nice to be able to downshift when someone is really riding your ass too..

Folks,

Lets remember that the 80 Series came with 3 different transmissions over its lifespan.

The A440F in the 91/92 FJ80 came with 2nd gear start just by shifting the transmission into 2nd. No button needed. It will stay in 2nd gear all day long. I use it all the time.

Consult your owners manual for your transmission operation.

I do use my 2nd start button most of the time when I'm in low range. Crawling up or down hill would be the exception. Starting in 2nd (low range) is critical for deep snow and deep mud.
