Welcome to the 2nd Annual Big Bear A Thon of 2024.

UPDATED 8/12:
This is a multi-day base camping and exploration event set for Thursday 8/22 to Saturday 8/24.

Thursday 8/22:
We will meet at 10 am at Victoria’s Family Restaurant (33227 Hilltop Blvd, Arrowbear Lake, CA 92382)
Travel route: Convoy up mountain following highway 18 >> Green Valley Lake Rd >> Holcomb Valley Road (3N16) (optional detour on 3N93) >> 3N14 >> 3N12 >> 3N12C >> 2N09A >> Camp at yellow post #31. End to end is 25.8 miles. I will take the optional more challenging route along Holcomb Creek Trail (3N93) while one of the club members (Brent?) will lead the easy riders to camp. I'm banking on securing YP#31 but if we have to find alternative, I will post definitive camp coordinates after we set up camp.

Friday 8/23:
We will leave at 10 am from Camp to White Mt along 3N14 (Coxey) >> 4N16 (White Mt) >> 3N17 (White Mt) >> back to Camp. This may be run in reverse depending on conditions. The loop is approximately 31 miles.

Saturday 8/24:
I've planned two routes with enough overlapping sections that we can either break together along the way or enjoy watching some of the old Toyotas (and maybe newer ones) drive over interesting obstacles:
  1. One of the club members (Trail coordinator Marc?) will lead the easy loop from Camp >> easy section of Gold Mt and back >> John Bull east gatekeeper >> Holcomb Valley >> John Bull west gatekeeper >> and back to camp. This will be easy and can be done mostly in 2wd but 4Lo will also be required at some spots.
  2. If there's enough interest, I will organize a run through Gold Mt from gatekeeper at highway 18 >> all of John Bull from east to west >> back to camp. This loop is definitely challenging and will likely leave an indelible mark at least in our memories!
Trails in the areas are mild to wild and we will explore the area to the best ability of our vehicles. Be sure that your vehicle has recovery points in both front and rear. Without recovery points you can still join us at camp but won't be trail riding.

Please reply here if you plan to join. And I hope you do!

Im very interested! Will try and make it to club meeting this Sunday (need to double check where/when it's taking place...as im pretty sure the former host location im familiar with has been retired by now...)

where/when it's taking place
From last month’s meeting announcement:

We will meet on Sunday, July 7th, at 4:00 PM. As usual, we will meet at club member Rich Petrulio's open space property in Modjeska Canyon (AKA, "The Dirt"), where we can park our rigs, and set out our camp chairs in a big circle. The property address is 17336 Croatian Street, Silverado, 92676.

We’ve been meeting at the Dirt for quite some time. It’ll most likely be the same time/place this Sunday. A new meeting announcement should be coming soon.

I'm planning on this one. See you Sunday.

Im planning to drive up friday am .

Here’s a map from OC Cruiser 97 that includes YP#31 and alternative sites marked in blue on the upper right corner.

Congratulations on the new 80. OC Cruiser 97 posted above that he is coming on Friday. If timing works out you two might want to connect and convoy to camp.

I've compiled the four routes here viewable on OnX. I also imbedded the links to GaiaGPS routes.

Day 1: For those who plan to arrive by 10 am at Victoria's Secret Restaurant and depart from Arrowbear to Camp, I will be with the convoy.

Day TBD: The trip from Camp to White Mt and back will take us all day and we will stay together.

Day TBD: The easy route from Camp to Gold Mountain peak and back plus JB gatekeepers avoids going through the waterfall and gatekeeper at the bottom half of Gold Mt. It will also take us to the gatekeepers at both ends of John Bull without having to run the trail.

On the same day if one of you would volunteer to lead the group through the easy trail, I will lead harder alternative to run full lengths of Gold Mountain and John Bull in a loop that would meet up with the group at GM peak and JB gatekeepers.

Let me know please if you could be a trail leader for the easy run to Gold Mountain peak and back plus JB gatekeepers.

Any way to export these files? Got the 7 dayctrial, but don't want to subscribe to yet another app.

Thx - got all three routes (not the hard one) downloaded to GIAA. Day one from Arrowbear looks like the reverse of a trail we ran a couple of years ago. 'Almost' one way beyond Green Valley Lake?

If you’re thinking of Snow Slide from the AAT work day, it’s not. Snow Slide to Butler peak is closed due to the damages from the past couple winters. This is the reverse of the snow run from that Joe led that passes the eastern gatekeeper to Holcomb Creek 4x4 trail which we won’t take that obviously. The route is a thoroughfare between Green Valley and Holcomb Valley and to Hanna and Big Pine Flats. This can be done in 2WD if I had that option in my LC80.

Well...I do have that option! ;)

I would, however, like to throw it in 4H, 4L and lock up the rear differential. Who knows, I could get adventurous and disconnect the sway bar too!
