markhc......
I also keep flares, two cellphones, a CB Radio, HAM Radio, 7 days of water and food, blankets, chest of tools, $5000 in cash, a monkey, a blow up doll and one tied up and gagged Toyota Engineer.

Have you ever considered that all of that additional "weight" is just adding to the strain on your 2L-TE?:)

Well aware of all the additional weight! :) It's payback watching the Toyota Engineer squirm when I hit the hills. What do you think the monkey and the blow up doll are for?? :grinpimp:

New

Just recently my LJ78/2L-TE suffered from hard starting (to the point of draining the batt after 10 plus attempts). It just started from two-three attempts then five, until the nth time. A trusted mechanic checked the fuel pump, lines, glow plugs, even the valves. The culprit? Fuel Filter. Just to share.

P.S. I did like how this thread had gone its way, nice people, nice posts too. :D

Atleast, I'm one of those in denial, and still can't get the hang of it!

i just reread the thread, some funny s***.

and yes, a fuel filter and/or bad tank of fuel can be easily overlooked. most mechanics i know want to start at the expensive end and work back to the cheapest fix.

The start up problem still here.

Interesting is, after playing around with the pump, the start got just great. But after five days it's back again :hhmm:

really rough start like that makes me think that it's not getting the proper glow cycle. It's definitely not firing on all cylinders, as opposed to being just a smoky start.

pull each glow and do a bench test ...
what i do is take a battery, attach the ground to the vise base, stick the glow plug in the vise at the "wrench" part gently, then touch the tiny tip at the top with the positive and count the seconds for it to glow VERY orange.
do each one like this
but
be careful since once red hot that bitch will burn your fingers badly if you happen to grab it in the wrong spot.

you could have one or more dead or dying plug.

Thanks guys!
John, the problem is, the engine started little better but still rough like this even when it was warm. I am still considering the timing of the pump could be the issue. Glow plugs are Toyota new, getting voltage on top of them.

your fuel pump timing should be 0 degrees at 800 rpm. when i bought mine, toyota had changed the pump and had it 21 degrees advanced. still started and ran fine, but both the turbo and engine light were on and had absolutely no power. the previous owner took it to three other mechanics and no one figured it out, he was so mad at the truck, he sold it to me for a $1000. i found Mud and went from there, with the help of my nieghbor who is a mechanic at the GM dealer. Changed main temp sensor, changed pump timing, and the turbo was just about hooped so changed that too. Good as new, or as the 2lte gets. as you adjust pump timing, you will have to adjust your tps also.

Ok problem solved now!
It was 2 sticky injectors making me headaches for few months now. They were rebuilded 5 months ago. Has anybody idea why this could happen except for bad fuel?

Didn't know this is also an option and paid again for cleaning them.
Anyway, John from Radd cruisers gets the radiator cup when I locate it :-)

john wrote: Carefully open the hood, and with the engine cold, jack up the radiator cap about 30 cms. Once you have done that, hold the cap in place while you back the LJ78 out from under it. Now, get yourself an HZJ77 or a PZJ77 and drive it back under the rad cap. Lower the rad cap into place. Dispose of the LJ78. Problem solved.

too bad, i have a pump for a 2LTE sitting here looking for a new home. it was supposed to have been rebuilt (looks like it but who knows for sure) and off the LJ78 converted to PZJ78.

see here is what most of you don't understand or appreciate, 4 or 5 years ago now i put a stop to importing the LJ/LN series trucks because i saw the issue with the head. if all i cared about was money and not cared about my customers then why would i do that? i tried to talk numerous individuals AWAY from buying them including mister postman and that bloke from Calgary who bought one and headed off to Vancouver and never made it because the head cratered. i refuse to work on the 2LTE (and now have a similar distaste for KZTE engines) so, no, i am not "out of work" because of these engines.

sooner or later i see a post from someone that didn't listen to stay away. i make a warning based on experience, people respond with "but it is a Toyota" and buy one. then after a few more thousand invested they sell the dreaded engine to someone else and they in turn come on mud complaining about the fuel mileage, the lack of power, the head went south, the electrics are acting up and so on and so on.

like i said before, i love the LJ78 but hate the heart murmur:bang:. i now have a PZ installed in a LJ78 and i have to say this is what Toyota should have done. lots of power, one wire operation, smooth ride, cushy interior, lots of room and wicked off road.:steer:

yes, the ECU could be your issue but i hate electronics so i don't know.:meh:
Do you still have a working injector pump for a 2LTE (for a LJ78)? Mine is throwing a code 2, 5 and 12. It seem I cannot get any fuel into the injectors. the splill valve and the timing valve makes a clicking noise when I give it some volts... There is diesel in the supply line.. Now I am looking for a complete pump (not know what else to do). I know this is a very old post...but worth a try. thank you
