Radd Cruisers: The whole "jack up your rad cap" thing comes from my high school days when we were all driving piles of junk and it was a joke amongst friends. I had the pleasure of driving a '63 VW beetle - no heat to speak of, crappy wipers, and a 6V electrical system that was not capable of supporting more than the stock AM radio.
(63 VW Beetle)....Worth a small fortune today among those weird VW people especially if it has a "peace symbol" sticker on the back glass:)....one man's junk can be another man's treasure:)

"When people want me to provide endless information about their vehicles - especially really useless ones - it gets my goat just a little each time, because a good majority of them have no intention of buying anything or getting something as simple as an oil change service done."
I understand and can see your frustration. I am by no means a Land cruiser specialist. All makes and models for over twenty years. The head and poorly designed electronics of the 2lte is so typical in the automotive industry. For me it's not a special (**** box) vehicle. There are tones of vehicles out there that are in the same boat and many that are worse.
Sorry John and Wayne, but you are the go to guys. You have built a reputation for this and it's not going away ant time soon. It is unfortunate that a large amount of RHD owners buy these vehicles to stand out in a crowd, not for the vehicle it's self.

Enough said.

P.S The rough cold start up is a changeling one. At -14deg c mine starts like a dream no pufs no stumble just away it goes. Wierd huh. I have taken sensor reading unstarted and cold and if mine goes south we will see which one changed.

Take Care and good luck

that is what i found with the LJ78s my wife and drove, from about 2C down to -9C it would start like s***, colder or warmer and it started like a dream.
i installed a manual glow system in mine and it helped a lot.

Good justification to have a Winter home in the Southern U.S.
You don't even need a passport or visa...you can just sneak in like everyone else.:) .........1978HJ45

Hey John! I know I called you ones (maybe twice) for some help on the phone and I am really thankful for that. Now you again help me with finding the problem. Also the other people wayne, pradocruzer, etc. Sometimes I wonder if you don't have anything better to do :) But without you guys... you know... it is hard to find some help.
I stopped in one shop, they were familiar with 2lte and I was told BLOW BY= PISTON RINGS. I got confused, because almost every shop tells me different opinions and I think you are the first one who summarized few possible ways, what could be wrong.
I know I owe you a beer at least. I hope to stop by soon ;)
cheers! Tom

Be very careful when offering free beer...you will have people like me ( who don't squat about the 2L-TE ) offering advice just for the beverage:) ..............1978HJ45

I know, I am offering it only to people in the range I can cover with my bicycle (+-100km). I don't want to make such a long trips with my LJ78 :D

It is quite common to have sticking piston rings on these engines, and if the engine was apart for work for any length of time, then rings will certainly be stuck.

This type of situation is more common on some makes of engines than others, such as Honda, and the recommendation is to repair/replace the rings and lightly hone the bore to allow the rings to seat properly.

You can also try to soak the cylinders for several days with a penetrant / solvent that will soften the carbon that is sticking the rings (Moovit, Seafoam etc.). To do this, take out the plugs, rotate the engine back from TDC 90* until the pistons are mid bore, then add 30 mls of the penetrant. Soak for 2+ days, then place LOTs of rags over the glow plug holes and spin the engine over to remove the solvent.

Replace the glow plugs and start up the engine - it will smoke like mad for while as the solvent burns off. Your neighbors will hate you for the clouds of smoke, but the engine will probably run better afterwards.

Run some seafoam or crankcase flush in your engine for about 10 minutes after it's been warmed up, change the oil and filter - and use a 10W30 diesel grade oil if you're on the coast. 15W40 is too heavy. Petrol engine oils don't have the right additive packages for diesels... so do not use petrol engine oils in your diesel if you want it to survive.

HTH, John

Hi, my name is Lee and I'm in denile about my 2L-TE

I plan to arrange a self-help group for all of you who are in denile about your 2L-TE but dont have the strength to absolve the addiction. It's a bit like a bad relationship with a hot girl, its one sided, you put in all kinds of money and energy into her because she's hot, only to get bitch slapped in return.

Lee

that is going to be a BIG group ...
bigger than the "the North American LJ78 Appreciation Club" that Charles is starting.

The annual meeting can actually be held inside a LJ78. One row of seats can be used to hold the refreshments. Even Wayne can come....it will show that we are tolerant of "those people.":)

You don't mind if we meet half way do you:D
Wayne has to come, he has the only 78 that will make it both ways.

Wayne is welcome however he will be viewed as a "guest" and can not be shown the "secret hand shake".
When you say "half way" are you referring to half way to Canada
or halfway from South Georgia to North Georgia. ( remember I am driving a LJ78 also so I have limits:)).......1978HJ45

You have a very good point. Didn't think this out so well.
Half way may be out of reach for both of us:rolleyes::rolleyes:

When I pick up my daughter from school ( 20 mile round trip )
I always take my cell phone just in case. I have the local wrecker service and Radd Cruisers on speed dial.:)

I keep a bicycle strapped to my LJ78. When I get about 3/4 of the way up a long hill I pull my cruiser over and peddle the rest of the hill. I'd rather be out of breath peddling to the top, than from watching the head crack!

Just kidding. I do this because I want to stay in shape, not because I don't trust my truck. Denial? No denial here. No problems whatsoever. None at all. Everything is great. Just fine, no really...

I also keep flares, two cellphones, a CB Radio, HAM Radio, 7 days of water and food, blankets, chest of tools, $5000 in cash, a monkey, a blow up doll and one tied up and gagged Toyota Engineer.
