Got a buddy who has a 1985 FJ60 Came from a snow area in Cali...no salt rust, just snow/wet rust. Any hoo, with the rust...and a couple hundred dollars in parking tickets...he is looking to dump it...Scrappers..He said today, he would swap me straight across for a K2 mountain bike I have

Thinking of pulling the 2F / 4spd wTransfer drivetrain and swapping into the 66 FJ-45 I just picked up... 45 is really clean and the "F" motor runs...just need to have the carb rebuilt and tuned... (maybe)

but for the cost of a mountain bike I dont really ride....Would you do the swap?

Newer motor w/known miles...4spd...newer transfer case????
or
Older unknown "F" motor w/3spd??

Plan on keeping her for a looooooooooooooooooooong time.....drivability...

2F Swap

I did that a few years back and kept a3spd t-case as the split was toast. Love it so much I pulled the 2F back out and o/hed it .002 over pistons and the cam with headers completely desmogged. Love it even more.

I would swap it even if I was not doing the swap and whatever else I could use in the future but that's just me. I would do a compression test on both engines before I do anything. Take your drums off and check your brakes. Drive it for a while and figure out what else it needs. Enjoy it and then do the swap. And don't kid yourself, this is only the beginning and the mods will keep coming. :)

I like my F and 3 speed column shift.
going 4 speed, you'll cut your hump, splitcase= no parking brake, throtle linkage mods.
it's all doable, it's what YOU want for the rig.

Trade him, keep it in the garage. if you don't like the F and 3 speed swap it out later.

Even if you never do the swap, that's too good a price to pass up, I say grab the 2F and tranny, and plan on the swap. If you never get to it, you'll still have a perfectly good drivetrain for a rainy day.

Gumby, allow me to introduce myself....... :D

Pics, or it didn't happen!

Actually, I just love puritanical LC's. Show 'em!

Do the swap and then it will be easy to put a 5 speed in down the track. The 2f is a beautiful engine and the split case is much stronger and quieter. You can always buy another mountain bike:D

Given your rig is so old, you will not have to smog it (even in Kalifornia), so you can tweak up that 2F and really get some power out of it. It iwll also be easier to get many parts for than the old F.

I helped my cousin put an 85 2F/4 speed into his 72 FJ40 and he loves it. We did it over 10 years ago, and he has had no dramas since the swap.

Cheers,

Josh

Beautiful 45.

Do the swap. Mountain bike for bullet proof drive train? That's a good deal.

I have yet to see anyone care about "numbers matching" LCs

Gumby, allow me to introduce myself....... :D

OK so there are some weirdos out there, but in general it won't hurt the value and will probably help the value.

Not like the 69 Camaro we have here at the shop that is worth more with the 327/ 2 speed auto than it it would be with a 396/4speed even though that would be a way better car.

Like others have said already...that's too good a deal to pass up. That being said. I swapped a 4-spd into my 63 FJ40 years ago, only to get nostalgic and go back to 3-on-the-tree, all the while cursing myself for "ruining" a clean original cruiser in the first place.

I also swapped in an FJ60 drivetrain, including axles, PS, etc. into my 45, but what I started with was a pile of parts, a disassembled F, and tranny/transfer sitting in the bed for 10+ years. Not sure I'd do the same swap given a clean running 45 to start with. That being said, I don't regret it one bit. The 2F, 4spd, PS, disc brakes etc. make it drive like a 60. One thing for sure, de-smog it when/if you do the swap, the U.S. 60 series 2F is mess of emissions B.S.

Bottom line, do what ever it takes to make it something you'll drive and enjoy. Which is the first thing you should do, drive it and enjoy it. Don't tear it down and turn it into a "project" right away, enjoy it for the summer at least.

Good luck,

Dan
