Yep, Welch plug and cup plug are two different things. Welch plug is used to close the oil gallery that goes all the way through the block. It can be threaded to 1/2NPT, but I don't bother anymore. The block is HARD, and cutting a good, deep pipe thread is not easy.

I can USPS Priority Mail a couple of the welch plugs to you for $10, if that would help.
Jim please ship a few plugs. I could use them for sure. Thanks again.

so the plug has been installed but now i have no oil pressure????? checked oil levels and sending unit wire.... no pressure. I still had pressure when the plug came out and i pulled over very quick as i saw smoke from the oil on the exhaust pipe. Ready to get her back on the road.

Jim - I would like to order 2 plugs. I tried to PM you but couldn't for some unknown reason. PayPal?

This is part of the oil circuit.

Yes that's what I am referring to. See the third photo in this post.

The welch plug is meant to expand in the hole. If it is hammered past flat its diameter is smaller than if the disk was flat. So You want this to expand as much as possible. I just don't know if mine is tight enough. And then it needs some sort of sealing border.

Here are some photos of the plug un-installed:

Where did you buy your plugs?

@chadragland I believe I bought those from a local dealer. I bet you can still get some from @FJ40Jim though.

'83 FJ60 2F engine. Hey everyone, I'm in the same boat. Have had a chronic oil leak and undercarriage covered in oil. Finally decided to replace RMS since clutch job seemed imminent (grinding into gears especially reverse and generally difficult shifting - getting into gear). Found the clutch pressure plate and bell housing covered in oil, friction plate streaked and ringed with hard oil smudges - reason for clutch plates sticking together I'm guessing. Engine side of flywheel was dry. RMS leaking for sure but when I pulled the bellhousing, found fairly profuse oil leak from rear block oil plug (not cam plug). So found this thread. Thanks @klinetime574 everyone who has contributed, especially @FJ40Jim. I've already dropped the oil pan because I wanted to replace the gasket although in retrospect was prob unnecessary - oh well. Here's my question, could I just tap the center of convex expansion plug to try to get it to seal and then add the JBweld trick? Mainly, I'm having difficulty sourcing plug since I'm in AK and everything costs arm and leg to ship. I have left message with Toyota dealership but I'm skeptical. Looks like Hubbardspring.com makes them but sizes skip from 22mm to 25mm - thanks mr. hubbard. Hey @FJ40Jim, where did you get your supply?
Thanks y'all,
Eightch (Aka H)

Mine was leaking and leaking a lot. I thought about installing a new plug but did not think I could do a good installation while lying under the Cruiser. I cleaned it well and packed the cavity with the ubiquitous blue Peramtex goo :hillbilly:, overfilled actually, and slapped the bellhousing back on. I may have added a layer of duct tape but don't remember for sure. That was about 2 years ago and a ton of miles, still leak free.

This fix lasted about 6 1/2 years and now the leak is back.

I remember having to do this about 7 years ago. AFAIK the engine had never been out before, but mine was definitely threaded - no idea if that was a later-year "fix", or a previous owner finally had enough... May be worth looking into as a potential fix?
