Hello everyone.

A couple 2F questions for those more knowledgeable than myself.

1. Are there significant differences between any of the 2F engines? (if I buy an early 2f and install it in a late model 2F, are there accessories or items that might not bolt up as I would expect?) Or vice versa? As a somewhat related example - I know that early 3B engines don't have some of the mounting points in the block for power steering bracket for example. Wondering if there are any gotchas in the world of 2F engines that I am not aware of.
2. Does the serial number on the engine tell me anything about the engine itself? Wondering if there is any significance to the numbers.

Thanking the forum in advance for any information or guidance here.

Early 2F blocks don't have the holes for mounting a power steering pump. engine number can tell the approximate date of the engine manufacture. There's also a cast number on the block that can tell the date.

Adding some more info, later model 2F's (somewhere in 79) used a flat top piston vs a domed piston in the early 2F's so the heads are different for these two versions. Air cleaners will not be compatible across the two motors, so if you are replacing a later 2F with another earlier 2F and plan to use your existing stock air cleaner that is not going to work. There may be other gotcha's but I'm not that knowledgeable on the later 2F's.

If it were me, I'd rather find a late flat top piston 2F than an earlier domed piston 2F. IIRC the later models had better compression and motor parts for the earlier 2F's are harder to find (TEQ domed pistons are NLA). @Pighead is correct on the power steering mount holes, the early models were not drilled for PS.
