2F GM TBI with MegaSquirt ECU Project

You got ahead of me. I am still on a carb (still building the MS-II board) and just installed the LC-1 now because it didn't have any dependencies. Also like to see carb numbers and later the ECU numbers

That is very interesting then. Of course I have very little idea how a carb works, I'm a software engineer by day so EFI makes complete sense to me and carbs puzzle me :hillbilly:

This is a great project, I'm looking forward to seeing you get it up and running.

I see an advantage to indicator lights and would prefer to have quality lights and senders instead of permanent gauges. I also keep Mr. Heisenberg (sp?) in mind when thinking about gauges. Gauges do not grab your attention when something goes wrong unless you are monitoring them constantly. That's fine for short drives, but when rolling on long trips it's just not reasonable to try to do. I also question the value of a gauge from a mfg that does not publish what the accuracy and repeatability of their gauges is.

Ideally I'd have something like a Motec or Stack 'gauge' and a set of indicator lights.

Training/eduction on EFI

I have found two places for education and training on how to Tune a vehicle with the likes of the MegaSquirt (in addition to MS's website and their book referenced in earlier posts)

One does webinars: EFI Tuning Technologies::..

(Starting at $75. I think I going to take the class on March 22nd on How to find the Proper A/F mixture for your Engine, part 1)

Another has 1.5 day class (In Washington and Calif) EFI-101 for $600, and some others that cost more: EFI University - Electronic Fuel Injection Tuning, Training and Certification

Did some more soldering on the board, not too exciting yet. I have come to the conclusion, that assembling it myself is a one time thing. If/when I buy more MS-II boards, I will spend the extra $$ and buy the already built one. The education on this has been worth it - once.

ditto on that

I too am a SW engineer (C, Python, Java, linux kernel device drivers).

carbs are just an analog feedback mechanism, based on the Venturi principle, with lots of fuel stream smoothing functions done by mechanical and vacuum "levers" instead of software methods. Really cool and sometimes easier than ECUs, but other times a PITA.

I finished the EFI Tuning Technologies class, #1 and #2. I learned several things from them and I feel it was worth the $150 total. Couple that with the book and the online training I believe I can continue well with the MS project here. Later when I control the ignition system as well as the fuel I will take their 2nd set of classes on ignition control

BTW my O2 sensor via the gauge is more steady then before and does not bounce around like it did on the tired head. I think a solid head (guides, values, rocker arm, etc) is more predictable on Air-Fuel combustion. That should make the TBI more stable as well.

Having the mechanical in good shape will be vital for a good project

I am still working on this amid many other demands.

I came to the assembly point of types of dizzy pickup sensors. Since I am (was) ignorant I of VR, Helio and Optical sensors.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-...ickup-anyone-know-what-type-dizzy-pickup.html

is the link to my question and some answers

I also found a description of Distributor pickups at

Distributor Pickups

Pictures of 3 (VR, Hall and Optical) of the signal pickups can be found at

http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_articles/megasquirt_ignition_control.htm#fuelonly

I found that the standard FJ-60 uses the VR signal pickup.

I will be using the ECU for fuel only control initially, but hope to add ignition control in the future, and thus need to assemble the board properly to handle both

Hey norsk can't wait to see how your MS tbi turns out, my GM tbi is running great! I'm actually glad I didn't go the MS route. Too much soldering and to indepth tuning for me. I'm in over my head with the GM ecm already but it works and has alot more seat of the pants power to me! My junkyard tbi is great but I bet yours will be awesome and you should be happy with it. Are you going to head on to anything better with your efi training as far as racing?

progressing but a bit slow

I a problem with the MS, I configured it wrong and had to back out a couple of solders and configure it properly.

I have all the sensor circuits in, and am (almost) beginning with the control circuits. It was a very BUSY summer. Now with snow outside, I can finish assembling the ECU. The sensor circuits work with the simulator, they at least react when I change the pots. (I think if I did it over I would spend the extra $200 and get buy the assembled unit. Doh!

I am still committed to finishing this.

Still need to get the fuel filters, but have everything I need. I plan to install the ECU with its input sensors, but not convert to TBI until it gets warmer (no garage) again.

Longer term project than I expected, but that was due to "outside" events.
