Well said Jim, on all counts. Funny tho, I've been on the Net for over 2 years now and this is the first time I've seen any reference to THAT book. Very pleased to see I am not alone in my horror. I had a hard time just getting thru the intro, it was riddled with so many errors.

End of digression.

Berntd, are you now ready to focus on vacuum leaks and possible carb problems, and let this AP thing go?

Just trying to help.:)

First, I must point out "The LC Owner's Bible" is crap. It should be called "The mini/runner bible w/ minor errors and the occasional sidelong error-riddled reference to Cruiser".
.

LOL, looks like I bought a $14 piece of kindling . . . thanks for setting me straight though - good info on what causes burnt valves.

I got this book for Christmas several years ago. It is mildly interesting, but there is no real good info in it. By no means would I consider this a bible or any sort of manual. I found a ton of bad info in it. Most of the stuff I read about in it that I hadn't heard before turned out to be total BS after further investigation. It's simply one mans view of toyotas.

The valve can not burn if there is no free oxygen left in the chamber after combustion. If the mixture is correct or richer, valves don't burn. If the mixture is 18:1, and the valves are not Stellite or another inox alloy, then they are toast.

I agree Jim. The question still is whether the 2F runs at mixtures as low as 18:1 or not. My book seems to 'think' that it does and has to in order to meet emmisisons regulations.

I don't have any explanation as to why the valves all burned in the first place. I bough it like that and the valve clearance was near perfect. The again, someone could have adjusted it after the damage had been done.

It does not have any vacuum leaks. I have tested the brake booster and I replaced the PCV valve. There is nothing else connected to the intake and I also fitted a new manifold gasket. I also disassembled, ceaned and checked the carb.

If it runs lean, it is by design and I would rather test and correct it now before it is too late again.

Bernt,

There are some modern computer controlled engines that can run at 18:1. But they are equipped w/ drivebywire throttle, variable cam phasing and lift, stellite valves, multiple O2 sensors, wideband O2sensor, etc...

A carbureted engine won't run worth anything, north of about 16:1.

Emissions regs vary by country, kinda like religion. Some worship NOx (USA), some worship CO/CO2 (Asia), some worship percents, other worship g/km.

If the vehicle was sold into an emission regime that worshipped g/km and low CO/CO2, then it was calibrated lean to start with. Add a lack of valve adjustments and some crappy unleaded gas, and there go the valves.

Drive the truck w/ the timing set correctly, valves adjusted, carb rebuilt to stock spec and see how it runs and what the plugs look like. If plugs are light and truck feels saggy or breathless, then it's time to change jets.

If things are OK, then be glad that you fixed it, and enjoy your new Cruiser!

Whew! I don't know about all that hi-falutin technical mumbo-jumbo above, I just think we should change the spellin' of burnt valves to Berntd valves...and tell newbies to search it...
