So got to thinking, so starting looking. This is the only reasonable option which is affordable
and rational for our midsize trucks. Warn only seems to have military grade, read HUGE, and
the ComeUp winches that get above 9000 are into the 150 lb weight category and I don't think
my BJ74 let alone a 24V HJ60 would want that much weight on the front bumper.
The good news, these are priced below $1000 US so with the rep as being as good a winch as
WARN which I've owned so many I'm brand loyal but they got nothing that makes sense

Can someone explain why 24V winches use smaller hp motors?

That thing weighs 147 lbs. A 9000 would be more than enough for a 73, especially with
a snatch block.

They don't list it on their site. You can probably explain to me why 24V motors are smaller than 12V motors
and why not then put a larger 24V motor on? I have an 8274 12V but I'm not too keen on mounting it on
my 24V BJ74.
BTW, I didn't end up with the Dodge I'd asked you about, seller reneged and started jerking me. Too bad.
But using some of the money for tires on the 74, winch and bumper/rear bumper to follow soon.
 
you can go to a starter/alternator rebuilder and for a few hundred bucks they will re-wind your 12v motor into a 24v motor and that would be your cheapest option. Others have run 12v 8274 on 24v rig and have had good luck, but like you, i'd be worried the time you really needed it stuck in the middle of nowhere with no one to give you a tug, it would burn out ;)

Years ago I got a 24v motor for a warn (or more likely a ramsey)from pc auto in duncan. Not that the price means anything now, but it was about 300 bucks or so.

Suspect they put smaller motors on so they rate the same as 12v versions. Pretty sure there's a formula for power and voltage / number of windings etc. Far too technical for me at this hour tho, all I know is 24v winches pull harder.

I've abused the crap out of my 12v warn running on 24v winching out heavy lumps of concrete or trees etc, all over the yard. No motor issues, just the garbage thin aluminum castings , which would have broken on any voltage. Suspect that brake system the way it snaps on and off causes a lot of shock. Really hate those winches. :lol:

Speaking of, many moons ago you mentioned you had an old Ramsey in the shed...:hmm:

I prefer to just get what I need. Seems every time I try the conversion, it seems to cost more in the end than just buying it.
Ask me how I know after spending close to $3K on converting a starter and alternator on a 12HT to 12V. In the end, $500 plus shipping
and I have new. Oh, and the $1050 shipping the truck home from the Yukon...…..

I've just had coffee with Rob, WARN has a NEW 10,000 lb 8274?? Maybe 24V is possible?? I've sent Warn customer service
an email.
 
Yup, but the 12K winch he bought is #121 lbs I misread winch to gross shipping.
So like I said, the extra weight is something to consider. I'm surprised the Comeup winches
are as light as they are.

Nope, was on the truck when I bought my BJ42 18 years ago. I did buy a spare 24V motor from a guy in Alaska, but looks like its from a newer 8274, so I don't know what I am going to do with that thing, but I have 4 or 5 8274's that I can swap the 24V motor to, or get a 12V rewound, I'm not too worried, won't be buying anything new from warn for a while. I did buy a brand new Warn 10,000 recently from Cruisin off road, as he is a warn dealer, talk to Jason, he was really good to deal with, might know more then the computer warrior.

I've got one new 8274. 2 used I picked up for around $200 ea. One the previous owner took apart to rebuild. Don't know
why and it's just a put together. But I hesitate to just bolt on a 24V motor. I don't know enough to just put it together
as a 12V and expect it to be good. I've seen enough 24V stuff that is just wired different, dome lights in the 60's. I have
no idea the solenoid or contactor can or does run power at 12V the same as 24V.
I'm waiting to hear back from WARN. As you can see from above, no sense talking to ms bradley
 
The only difference between a 12v and 24 is the motor, and an external relay block? Pretty straightforward to change voltage.

All the relays and crap can be replaced with one of those Runva contactors which is a cleaner setup anyways. I loathe that block of relays old winches come with.

The runvas are 12v, but they'll switch any voltage, you just need to use a small 12v lead to power the relay. Might be a similar relay out there that's 24v, but it's a pretty simple bit of wiring.

Or if you insisted on having it the same as a new warn 24v, you could buy 4 of the same relays they use and hook them up. :meh:
 
It's been a while since I did mine, but IIRC the solenoid pack on a 24V 8274 uses the same solenoids as a 12V, they're just wired differently.
New motor, rewire solenoid pack, done.
 
New warn winches use contactors like the ones you describe. They do make 24v contactors as well from Warn. I just ordered and installed one on an 8274 I installed a 24v motor on. Pulls way harder than a 12volt one. You really need to pay attention when your hands are close to the drum.
 
According to reply from WARN. 24V winches are for overseas shipment only. Not sold in N America except the big industrial models.
The new 8274-70 is rated at 10,000 lbs. They are delaying refresh on updating just to keep things simple for now. I
got no advice, but a good luck with pursuit of 24V winch.
I have a contact overseas I know to be reliable, so I'll go that route and see what info I can get.
 
You can get 24v motors and contacts from warn, as I said I did just a couple of months ago. Just because they don't sell them here complete doesn't mean you can't get one or the pieces to make one. Or you could pay a premium and get one shipped from another country?
