22re - pumps coolant to overflow??

This is from a craigslist ad, the truck is cheap. For you 22RE experts, what would you guess the problem is? To me it sounded like classic overheating, HG issues. Thought I'd take a look at it today.

This is a 1988 Toyota SR-5 4x4

22RE Motor has 184,000 unit. Truck has prior salvage title. Truck runs and drives good, only problem is I have to run it with out the thermostat because it will pump coolant out the overflow bottle. It doesn't get hot, you just have t pour it back in to the radiator.

Haven't had any other problems with it and it gets great gas milage. Gets about 23 MPG.

This implies it runs fine without a thermostat, which means a functioning thermostat might solve the problem. I would go through the cooling system, including the radiator.

My money's on the HG.

It might be the less resistance running w/o a T-stat offers, the less the piston has a chance to vacuum water past the HG and into the cyl.

IDK for sure. I do know that's not typical, and I wouldn't run a EFI w/o a T-stat. It'll run rich. (rich or lean, I get the two mixed up. It'll use more fuel.)


Salvage title, and mystery coolant problems...I think you got a block there...meaning, I'd pay what I thought the block was worth.

Well, simple enough to find out-ask a guy (not him of course) to do an oil change and check for coolant in the oil.

Or pull the dipstick... be suspicious if the oil is brand new... also look under the oil cap for white crud...

never had this problem with my 22re at all .....but years back on my dads 302 ford it did exactly this and it turned out to be a old weak radiator cap......tell em its a head and get it cheap and maybe???

Sounds like a rad cap to me too, now that PGH mentions it....

No, no ... it's the head gasket. Gotta be. It can't be that simple. That all by itself is worth at least a grand off the asking price. Right?
