Just about every time I come off the highway, the idle stays aound 1800-2000.

If I turn off the engine and start it back up again, the idle drops to normal.

Any ideas?

Check to see if the throttle plate is sticking. Mine does that about every 6-8 months. A few shots of teflon-based lubrication on the pivots and linkages and it's fine.

Next time it does it, leave the idle high, pull over in a safe place, pop the hood and see if the throttle is stuck open, try to push it back down by hand. It could also be a sticky throttle cable.

If your engine has the same emissions equipment mine has, then your problem is 1,000 percent normal. That high idle burns-off the excess air/fuel mixture in the intake when/after you decelerate. If that did not happen, then your engine would be too loaded-up as you approach/sit at a red light, the engine could flood, then die. Additionally, your engine would not give that excess air/fuel a full burn, and it would be thrown out the tail pipe as emissions. This is also one of the problems guys have when they believe they do not need a VSS with thier fuel injection conversion. The VSS and Ignition Module control these idle functions.
If your problem is far in excess of this normal situation, then have a mechanic check into your idle functioning????

I'll double-check the throttle linkage and good to hear everything may be ok after all.

Thanks for the posts guys.

my 89 has a mechanical speedo and no VSS.
never has his problems.
but i do always see a secondary code for the VSS when i check em.
not sayin your wrong about anything else, its a good place to look.

I would also check the dash-pot operation. Its job is to keep the idle a little high right after the throttle returns to idle. It should only last a second or so.
