Hi there, I've been looking for a while now, this forum rocks!

I just got an opportunity to get an 05 GX470 for <6k, but it has 220k miles on it. I know it'll need suspension work (I'll do a coil conversion), and I'll check the transfer case for leaks and the drive shaft for the clunk.

Am I crazy for getting something this well used? I put maybe 6k miles a year on my cars, and it will see mild off-road tailst only occasionally.

It has multiple owners, but a decent maintenance record and the current owner wouldn't hurt a fly so I'm pretty confident she's not hiding anything.

I'm I better off paying $10k ish for something in the 150-180k mileage range?

Thanks!

If good maintenance as you say and second timing belt, water pump, and plugs are done, then I wouldn’t hesitate.

Engine and transmission are solid to 400k. Maybe replace radiator, cap, thermostat, and hoses and you are good to go another 100k.

Personally, I would not purchase one with that mileage. However, many do and they run well with the proper maintenance.

I bought a 2004 a couple of years ago with 254K on the odometer. It had a pretty sketchy service history. It had a few bumps and bruises but it was mechanically fine. I think that these trucks are so well built that even if they weren’t serviced according to schedule, they will still last a long time. The 4.7 is probably the most bulletproof motor that Toyota has ever built. I wouldn’t be afraid to buy one with that kind of mileage. It’s just getting broke in. These motors typically exceed 300K with no major repairs. My two cents. FWIW.

I believe I've seen the one you're referring to on the Facebook marketplace. I paid $6,500 in Denver for my 04 with some bodgy cosmetic repairs but a good service history. I would have preferred to buy an 05 sport edition with higher miles for less dough. Even if you do the necessary repairs, drive it for a couple years, and wind up with hail damage you'll come out ahead, at least that was my experience with a 290k tacoma with no service history. The disclaimer there is that I am able to do most to all work myself

Thanks everyone! I had found it on Facebook marketplace and was all scheduled and ready to buy it when the seller sold it to family at the last minute :(. I'll keep looking! I'm definitely leaning towards 05+

With these 2UZ drivetrains, you do not have much to worry about as long as general maintenance has been done regularly. My last build, a 99 Land Cruiser had a 2UZ religiously upkept by a pastor (pun intended) and had 415k miles which is now being offroaded by a new owner. My new to me 03 GX had 186k miles, 6 pages of service records from one owner and was squeaky clean. I have no doubts this 2UZ will run for many more miles.

I looked at a GX last year with 220k miles on the clock and ultimately didnt get it for one reason - it was gold.....
I kind of regret it, the price was amazing and I inspected it up and down with a fine tooth comb. Timing belt changed, radiator, rear shocks - everything according to the book. I pulled Carfax and called the mechanic that was listed on the records. They said they had billed over $11k in service fees for the truck over the years. Told me the area the owner lived (all miles were freeway) new tires, interior looked as if no human had ever entered it except for slight wear in the driver's seat. But it was gold and I let it go. I could have butched it up with a lift and sliders and been good. I regret it having driven a 97 Lexus with 170k miles to 360k miles with barely a hiccup...
