The issues with the Tundra’s turbo engine was determined to be with the wastegate actuators, which they outsourced. Apparently they have since found a new manufacturer. To their credit Toyota seems to be covering the claims without question but some have complained about how long it’s taken.

Outside the more important requirement to make sure all maintenance like oil changes are done per schedule on Turbos, the real issue is the hassle required to repair / replace because of its location.

yes, i guess my issue is that turbos will need to be replaced at some point, unclear after how many hundreds of thousand miles. and I hear the repair, at least on the tundra, is a body off repair? seems very intensive and not able to be done in a home garage.
 
I think it is a little early to know about the long-term reliability of Toyota's V6 twin-turbo engine. I think that the reliability of other twin-turbo engines is not likely to be informative as to the reliability of this particular engine.
The LS500 has been running the same v35A twin turbo engine since 2017. Can't comment on the highest mileage since that data is hard to find on the interwebs.

He’s a bit of a kool aid drinker but it’s a good video showing its location. I’ve also read that Toyota is looking at making it easier to service but that’s beyond my limited expertise.



The good news I suppose is that by the time the 550 and future turbos are released there will be lots of driven miles on the system so we will know better what’s what.

The LS500 has been running the same v35A twin turbo engine since 2017. Can't comment on the highest mileage since that data is hard to find on the interwebs.
I don't have any hard data - but I've heard from lexus mechanics that it has not been a super reliable engine in the LS. And it's IIRC 37 hours of labor to swap a turbo in an LS. VERY expensive to own out of warranty if there's a problem. I suspect the LS is near its end of life as a product either way. But it hasn't been very popular.

To me - the basics are well designed. The cooling of the exhaust pre-turbo should really help. And the twin scroll instead of variable geometry means less parts to fail. But the location of the turbos is not good. There are plenty of options on how to mount them and make them accessible. Toyota chose not to make them serviceable without major effort. An inline 6 would be a much better engine design for long economically useful life because of the access and significantly lower cost to maintain and repair. And with an I6 you can run single or dual turbos to offer a variety of versions like BMW does with the B58. Toyota should have made an I6 version of the T24A instead of a v6. But that's not in the cards. I think if you want to own it for a long time - you probably want the 4cyl.

If Toyota ever gets its s*** together on battery tech and production, the best engine IMO would be a 20kwh battery PHEV version with the turbo 4. It would be more reliable, more powerful, and have significantly better efficiency over the TTv6. That's the powertrain I want if it were available. A 1.8kwh battery pack isn't useful. It looks like Toyota is working on it. But it's not there yet.

My only complaint is with the rear lift gate. I'm 5'10" and had to duck under the gate to reach the cargo area. I get it's a pre-production model. I didn't notice this on the TX.

Ok so it's very little, looks to possibly even be an alcantara type material. That would be a nice touch with the Nori Green Over Trail.
 
The more I keep seeing this, and I just watched the new commercial, the more I’m liking it. Need to see it in all black, and really questioning will it be nice enough to get me away from my 200. I’m patiently waiting…….

Typically, automated liftgates have a way to set the height so maybe someone set it lower than max. I'm also 5'10" and hope that is the case. Ducking every time would get old really fast.
 
They have the height adjustable lift gate option on the $30K RAV4 so I'd hope that they have it on a $70K+ Lexus GX.

A simple sensor relocation and wiring extension should solve that problem.
 
I really like it, and I look forward to seeing the Toyota version. To my eye, the 550 looks more proportionally similar to the 80 series than any Toyota or Lexus offering since. Same wheelbase, a bit longer, wider, and taller than the 80 series, with angular rather than rounded edges. Eager to see payload, fuel capacity, and interior volume.

Even by conservative measurements, it is within a few millimeters on either side of the LC200. Given the detuned version of the 3.4 V6TT, I think that the payload numbers will not be better than LC200 and probably slightly less. Interior volume will probably be less given that LX600 interior is not great. LX600 fuel capacity sucks…so, i assume GX will be same.

My feeling is that the GX550 will NEVER exceed LX600 in anything. So, everything on GX will be equivalent or less than LX. Otherwise, why would anyone buy LX?
