I'm counting on my GX lasting a good quarter century! By then, I'll be too old to thrash it and just need the heated seats to keep my old bones warm!

yes, I’m running 285/75s and with atrac only I’m very impressed.

I want to run 4.88 and a rear Eaton, I would be super happy for the life of the truck in this configuration

the ride quality is amazing, quick in the road, smooth on the trail, and you can carry near the same load as an 80

not to mention KDSS is a champ with a roof tent

But you can’t replace a quality built 80, I’ll keep her in the garage. 24 years later and it’s still doing the job. I hope the GX holds up as well

I regret selling my 80 but I also didn't want to use it like I should have because it was so clean, double edged sword kind of thing lol. I hope to have the GX build done by this time next year so that I can just sit back and use it for many years to come. I still love our 200 and I'd like to have a built one as well but I am just not so sure it makes much sense to have both, then again I am sure there are a few on this forum that would say otherwise lol.

I am torn between the ARB air locker and the Eaton electric out back, I already have the ARB Twin under the hood so that would make short work of that install and it is $400 cheaper than the Eaton as well. Decisions decisions, gotta love these first world problems.

The 80 was my first car, lots of memories. I’m in the same boat you are, I need to wheel it, it’s built to wheel hard but I just can’t seem to do it, the trucks clean and is my baby. I’ll just keep it nice and beat on the gx.

my family doesn’t understand why an old truck gets the garage and the newer Lexus is outside, but I value them differently

I bought the gx to use and have fun with, knowing it’s a 10-15 year life span, and replace, where as the 80 I want to last as long as possible

I drive about 50k a year for work, even a perfectly maintained truck can only last so long, 10 years is 500k of daily driving and off-roading, quite a tall order.

I bought the truck nov of 19’ with 50k, im sitting with just under 100k now. I’m glad I picked the gx 460, is been low maint, and will be for the foreseeable future, even with a cold start the engine idles like butter

I’m excited to see how long it can hold up, and I’m not looking forward to when it doesn’t. Hopefully Lexus or Toyota keeps making something similar.

Question to the group, will ATRAC still work with a rear locker, how will the truck behave?

I see 470's with 300K+ on them still going strong and the 460 is arguably better all around so if properly maintained I don't think that 400-500K is asking too much of it. We put 25-35K a year on our vehicles so this one will be over 100K in another two years as well and we just bought it new 15 months ago. We are already north of 30K miles and it would have been 10K+ more than that if it had not been for Covid lol. Like yourself, I built the GX to be used and not babied.

ATRAC should still work unlocked. Locked it may confuse the computer? It works off of wheel spin and rotational speed so a certain amount of wheel spin would be required to trigger ATRAC. Locked it may not trigger ATRAC.

I ran my Taco for 20+ years and 392,000 miles of smiles. If I run the GX the same I'll be 73. At that point a stock rig will do.

From what I understand the Harrop requires 4:88 gears. The ARB can use anything you want. After talking with Jason Demello about his 5th gen 4Runner, he has 4:88 and stated on his 2016 GX he'll run 4:56. He stated the 4R would scream (high RPM) above 80 mph.

Yea the Eaton requires 4.88's and with a 33-34" tire I feel that is too low, especially at highway speeds as you noted. Odds are I'll go with an ARB in the rear and 4.56's. I just have to decide between 285/75/17's and 295/70/17's now.

I chose the 285/75/17 for the slightly taller slightly narrower.

It is the more common and readily available of the two and there is more diversity within that size as well. Have you had any rubbing?

Since I tweaked the front suspension and finally found a good alignment shop, no. But I haven’t been on a really challenging trail since.

Some more stuff

ARB Roller Drawers, the fit is tight, I believe the drawers are 40 inches long, I would recommend something around 38 max to maintain space between the seats and drawers

overall I’m very happy, I used a wits end fridge cable to connect the fridge.

I have a BMC, and lots of trimming

90% of the time there is no rub, but if I’m getting frosty and stuffing the tires with force, they rub metal at the top of the wheel arch. I would not go any larger than 285/75. I feel like without more intrusive cutting they will not fit.

Since the lift and tires I’ve had lots of trail and highway time, I generally keep it in 5th gear all the time, but prefer the way it handles on road to a stock truck. the added weight and change in rpm is worth the trouble to me

285/75's are the way I am leaning. I've already done the BMC and very liberal trimming as it is so I doubt I'll need anymore for the 285/75's. I am only considering the 295's to keep them a little shorter but they are wider so they might present a different issue. I've got some time to figure it out as I won't be making this change until next fall or when I hit 40-45K miles on this current set of 285/70's.

I’ve mounted my arb drawers, roller top and roller floor, and finished my fridge wiring

I used the wits end kit Joey sells for the 80 series guys. Anderson plugs, mounts, the works

wired it into my distribution block under my seat

very happy with the outcome, everything is solid and simple

You might be the perfect candidate for a pedal commander if you keep it in 5th to keep the rpms up. I briefly looked at your posts and didn't see you mention it. Maybe a good temporary solution to keep your rpms from dropping too much, just a suggestion. Nice GX, looks like you went a long way in a short time 👍

My understanding is the pedal commander is for throttle response, I like fifth gear because it’s easy for the truck to maintain speed without rolling through the gears

I really need a regear, it feels just right in 5th in the highway, with 4.88 it should be on the money

the pedal commander changes the throttle mapping, keeping the gx from hunting for gears. but leaving it in 5th will work too. you're right, re-gear is the way to go.

I’ve never driven a truck with one, a buddy has one on an fj and loves it.

They really need to come out with a supercharger, with 4.88 gears this truck would be a rocketship.

I wish the gearing was lower from factory

While it could be lower, it'd definitely better than the stock gearing in the 4Runner. I think I am going to run with 4.56's.
