2015 Land Cruiser: Update Head Unit? (1 Viewer)

This has been discussed a few times recently. You're only option for a US spec LC is a GROM Vline (Lexus Toyota 2006-2009 GROM VLine Infotainment System Upgrade Video Interface). It doesn't replace the head unit but does provide an android powered system that interfaces with the existing touch screen. It's rather beta at the moment.

I like this solution. Only problem is, your phone will have to be a hotspot. With AT&T, they won't allow tethering with an unlimited data plan.

Now that its 2018 and soon to be 2019 MY, I have not really found anything to replace the lackluster head unit in the LC200. I know Toyota is finally adding CarPlay but only to Entune 3.0 and the LC won't get that until the next Gen is released. Other car companies are pushing out updates to allow CarPlay to be added, the head unit cannot be that old or so incapable that it can't be updated by software. For me I purchased an LC200 for a very long term ownership goal and I am hoping in the future someone offers a better upgrade that with the Masetro box which will add steering wheel controls, and we will of course need the climate control too.

I just bought a 2013 LC and I'm so bummed about the headunit and A/C controls. They are a giant leap backwards from my 2006 4runner with $350 Sony CarPlay unit. I would pay $1000, maybe more for a good solution to have CarPlay, rear camera, and physical A/C controls. I would give up all the other cameras in a heartbeat. Entune is pathetic.

Check out my post here about the beatsonic smartphone mirroring. It's easy to "replace" the function of the head unit with a smartphone using this kit. That's what I do, anyways. Having said that, the recent updates to Oreo Android on the S7 have made it lag more, so I'm looking for a better Miracast unit or I will upgrade my phone.

Thank you. I was looking at BeatSonic,it appears to be a straight forward option, but the downside is you still have to touch your phone which in NY can get you a nice ticket and 5 pts on your license. Still its an option I am considering.

Agreed. In Louisiana, it's a big deal too but we haven't seen too many stops from it so far. I haven't used Google voice with my phone much because I haven't had to, but if I had to go legit hands free that would be my next plan.

Must be we don't offer enough of a market to engineer the climate controls into it. Very disappointing.

I wonder if those Android things will ever reach the point where we could put about 3 GB worth of openstreetmaps data onto it. While I know it won't have real time traffic information, and you'll have to remember to update it every so often if you want changes, the level of detail is pretty great. I use it all the time in the Sierras, as I have OSM loaded onto my Garmin Montana.

OpenStreetMap

Zoom in and check out the detail on the 4x4 trails, for instance. It wouldn't be too bad having these maps loaded on the center stack instead of whatever Toyota provides.

Unfortunately the VX isn't listed as compatible:

Fit with models : GX:2012-, EXR, GXR: 2012-

I'd need to do more research but I assume that means the climate controls won't work
I have the 12.1 inch screen installed on my 2015 LC200 VX model. The screen makes the interior more up to date. My car never came with the OEM navigation system so as you guys can imagine this is a much bigger improvement than the CD unit my car came with

Does yours have the HVAC controls separate? FWIW I believe the wiring harness is different for vehicles with "hard" climate control buttons than for vehicles where the climate control is in the nav screen, so what works for you may not work for everyone :-(

In US models, most of the climate control is done in the screen. That's what we don't want to lose.

Some versions like my 2013 also have a windshield de-icer that is turned on through the screen. For the few replacement options I've seen, none of them handle this.

This works with 2008 - 2015, very detailed thread below.

Interesting. External temp doesn't seem like a huge loss. I wonder if it supports the front windshield de-icer - I think that's a 2012+ feature.

I'm mixed on the idea right now if it loses the rear video, though, since we use it with the kids on long trips. If it could play videos to the rear screen via Plex (either via mounted USB stick or sync'ed over WiFi/4G) I'd be sold.
