As many of you have seen, Toyota is re-selling the 70 series (wagon and 4 door pickup) in Japan for one year until mid-2016. I'm considering one of these vehicles and have a few questions.

The problem in Australia with the V8 70 series track difference between the front and rear- I am told that is unique to the V8. The 70 sold in Japan has the V6 from the Tacoma, so I'm working under the assumption that there is no problem with the track front-to-rear?

If I want an aftermarket front or rear bumper, it looks like ARB has the widest options. Am I missing anything by not considering others? If I go with an ARB, I assume I should go with a Warn winch too? or is that not a logical conclusion?

If I add a front bull bar and winch, I'll need to compensate on the suspension at the very least. I'm not interested in anything more than 2" of lift if that. I want enough to compensate for the added weight of the aftermarket gear and perhaps 1-2 size larger wheels/tires. OME obviously has an extensive selection but should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for anyone who has any advice.

Indeed the differnece in track width is found in the V6-equipped LC. I can assume the 1HZ as well.

Hell, we even had some early 2007 LC's that had the 1FZ-FE that had the track difference already.

ARB/Warn/OME sell some good, durable gear. Don't think you can go wrong with it!

Obviously Toyota does not consider it a "problem". How big is the difference?

Track width is 10cm wider in the front compared to the rear, for all VDJ, HZ and GRJ models.

I am running 5cm spacers in the rear with no issues. Tracks very well now in the deep sand.

ARB don't really have a rear bumper so your options are either Kaymar or the Lynx 4x4 from RSA.

Almost 4 inches?

Wow.

We lead a sheltered life over here and haven't been able to purchase new "real" Land Cruisers since 1998......

That is a helluva difference, no wonder folks want to "correct" it.

Are you sure it's 10cm and not 10mm. 4" as opposed to 3/8" inch. My 74 has a wider track on the front, about 1" inch.

A lot of 4x4 vehicles have significant track width differences front to rear. I believe it helps the vehicle track.

Example

  • 106.5, 64.5, 63.0 -- 1973-'91 Chevy Blazer 2WD
  • 106.5, 65.75, 62.75-- 1973-'91 Chevy Blazer 4WD
  • 131.5, 65.8, 62.7 -- 1973-'87 Chevy C-10, K-10
  • 131.5, 65.8, 62.7 -- 1973-'87 Chevy C-20, K-20, C30
  • 164.5, 65.8, 62.7 -- 1973-'91 Chevy C-30 Crew Cab
  • 129.5, 65.8, 62.7 -- 1973-'91 Chevy Suburban

Yeah this issue has been done to death on the Australian forums for years now, yet there's no real consensus or evidence that it's an issue, which sort of indicates that its not . But it sure looks weird if you're very accustomed to the pre 2007 70 series. It's not on purpose, they just couldn't be bothered changing the rear of the vehicle when they (had to) change the front.

Yes and it looks crap when you know its there. It looks like a t boned vehicle with a bad repair job going down the road.
Some owners report that on some tracks where the hump in the middle is quite hard, that the rear end sways as it bounces off the hump from one side to the other.
One poster claimed he got some sort of motion sickness from sitting in a company car on long field trips.
I dont like spacers but I would be fitting 30mm spacers each side if I had one.

I thought Toyota would have widened the rear fenders like Nissan did with the Patrol front and rear when they increased the track in the 90s.It improved the look of the Patrol as well.
It would give the 7* series a bit more space in the rear as well as they could push the wheel arches out 50mm each side.
Maybe with the talk of a limited life span ,they dont consider the effort worth it.

They sell all the production out as it is. No need to change anything to suit our wants.....:crybaby:

If I was able to buy one (which I'm not but that is a rant for another day) I would put at least an inch and a half spacer on the back.

Just so everyone knows, they widened the chassis at the front to accommodate the V8 diesel and this was also applied to the 1HZ and 1FZFE powered models after 07.
I personally would have favoured the retention of the 1HD FTE , if it could have been made to comply with emission standards
