OK, starting the trip planning thread for this year’s “American Adventurist” Desert Rendezvous event.
Date: Friday March 21 thru Sunday the 23rd.
Friday: We are planning on meeting at the General Patton Museum @ 62510 Chiriaco Rd Indio, CA 92201 (760) 227-3483. The museum is approximately 29 miles e/o Indio on I-10. Exit #173 (Chiriaco Summit). There is a large parking lot just out front of the museum and we will meet there. There is fuel and a diner to the e/o the museum if you need anything. The museum is “OK” if you haven’t been before and there are some cool tanks and the like to check out. Admission is now $5. If you want to check it out I suggest get there early and let’s plan on leaving the parking lot at Noon. We can air down in the parking lot as dirt is only 1.4 miles away at the trailhead of the Red Canyon Jeep Trail.
The trail itself is all 2 track typical desert road with a couple of small hills and tight corners to negotiate….Nothing difficult and nothing a stock 80 can’t handle. Piece of cake! At the other end of the trail we will hit the Bradshaw and follow that up for a couple of miles to the Rendezvous site.
Google Earth cords for the camp site are (33°35’58.13″N 115°32’13.31″W), Google Maps (33.599581,-115.536937).

Event Schedule as per Dave @ American Adventurist:
FRI:
1200 Arrivals
1800 Happy Hour followed by Campfire

SAT:
0900 Desert Cleanup/Trail Runs
1200 Lunch
1300 Desert Cleanup/Trail Runs
1500 Desert Cleanup Trash Photo/Group Photo
1530 DRV T-shirt distribution at Potluck area. Have your shirt ticket in hand, sizes are first come first serve!

1600 Fire up the BBQ's/Dutch Ovens
1700 Rendezvous Potluck/Dutch Oven Competition
1800 Desert Cleanup Raffle
1900 Campfire

SUN:
TBA

I will monitor Keller Peak and 146.460 on the drive out. We can use 146.460 while on the trail. If you can’t make it by Noon, we can meet at the campsite. Check Google Maps/Earth and you will find it is just s/o I-10 with easy dirt road access.

Looking forward to this and seeing some old and new friends!

Bring the trailer!
I think there will be a number of with trailers...I will be leaving long beach so happy to hook up with folks for the drive out.

We're bringing our trailer... We kinda have to, it'd be real hard to bring all of our stuff without it;p

I'll have my trailer as well. Red Canyon Jeep trail is easily negotiable with a trailer. One small climb as I recall took a little skinny petal run up, but that was about all. Fun little trail down to Bradshaw Trail up to the campsite.

I'm up for meeting somewhere in OC to head out there. Sean - didn't we meet at the Carl's Jr./Starbucks off Green River on the 91 around 9ish last year? That'll give us plenty of time to get to the Patton Museaum prior to noon to gas up, eat, etc.

Does 9 work for everyone on Friday the 21st?

I am at 405/ 55 so 9am at Carl's would work.

Sounds good. So planning on leaving carls jr at 9:00?

Yep - 9ish. Should give us plenty of time to get to the summit, gas up, eat and meet folks at Patton. Saw the museum last year so not going to again this year.

We can enjoy another yummy burger at the summit cafe!

Have Friday off from work and will be leaving SD in the morning. Will head out though Julian, to the Salton Sea and up Box Canyon to the Patton Museum if anyone wants to join me.

Look forward to seeing you again Dan! Hope you'll make it to Patton by noon!

Anyone up for heading west on Bradshaw down to Salton Sea and exploring Slab City, Bombay Beach and anything else down there Saturday? Looks like the trail goes all the way there.

I'm totally up for that. Been wanting to check out slab city & that area.

I plan on leaving early so should not be a problem making the Patton Museum by noon. It's a little more time to get there through Borrego but a much more peaceful drive. :steer:

I'm up for any outing. Heard there is a geode bed out there but not sure where.

We should be heading out Friday morning (specific time to be determined) too via the 8 to the 79 to the 78...

Maybe we can meet up somewhere along the way.

BorregoWrangler's blog on his trip did talk about some other geologic stuff, but not a geode bed.

I'm going try and make it but won't know until the week before. We should definitely caravan on the way out.

Sounds good. I will be leaving my house around 7:30 - 8:00 from downtown SD. Supposed to take 3 1/2 hours from my house to Patton Museum.

There are some areas along the Bradshaw Trail and near the Rendezvous camp where one could do some rock hounding.

Agate, jasper, and chalcedony can be found at Chuckwalla Well and Mesquite Spring along the Bradshaw Trail and along Augustine Pass.

Just west of the camp site, along the Bradshaw is a turn off for Spring Canyon where green and red jasper can be found. Geodes can be found off Chuckwalla Springs Road, west of Graham Pass and north of Bradshaw.
