Also very interested in this thread. I’d love to have a bit more growl, with no drone, for less than the $2k!? DD wants for their system. I’ve been thinking about swapping just the muffler or muffler/vibrant resonator combo.

So I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading and talking to multiple shops over this whole exhaust modification.

First, there is no way to eliminate drone with a resonators, it just makes it quieter. The only way to eliminate drone is to figure out the right length J pipe and no shop really wants to deal with it. Plus, sometimes you need two J pipes for different frequencies.

Now, Corsa exhaust has a muffler that eliminates the frequencies in our 5.7L engines. It’s just that they only sell them in cat back systems that fit the Tundra and Sequoia. Since they don’t make one for our truck, and don’t plan to, the only option is to buy the Tundra version and have a shop custom make the system. The Tundra is a Sport muffler and the Sequoia is the Touring muffler that has extra length for some fiberglass packing to quite it down. I say the Tundra one specifically because that muffler is shorter. It is needed because it is a single in/single out and it needs to be Y’ed into the muffler and there is not a lot of room in our trucks to stuff the bigger Sequoia muffler in the there.

My plan, once I verify the dimensions, is to have just the Tundra muffler put in with our stock piping and resonator. If I want it louder after that I will have the rest on the piping from the muffler back redone.

I’d love to hear your results, I’ve had great results with Corsa on sports cars in the past.

One of my last two mods or three maybe are gonna happen soon i hope.

1 - subtank
2 - slider steps
3 - intake / exhaust

How comparable do y’all think watching tundra youtube vids will be?
How similarly are they pipe sized and routed? Does anyone have a/b first hand experience?

Not a lot of folks running exhausts here. But i want some more noise. Getting bored to death over here with the truck.

when you thinking of installing?

Love my new LC but I wanted to hear that 5.7 V8 when I stepped on the pedal.

Installed a Dual in Single Out MagnaFlow #12288 today along with a Vibrant #1142 Ulta Quiet Resonator & DC Sport 4 inch Resonated Exhaust Tip.

Bought the parts off Amazon for $260 total. Had it installed today at the shop for $240 since it was 3 new parts welded. $500 total.

I gotta say, I love it. Just enough roar when you want it but quiet on cruise control on the highway. The new resonator and tip help kill the drone so it’s very light at 1500 rpm but no where else.

Here’s some pics of the new muffler in the middle, new rear resonator and exhaust tip.

About to pull the trigger on this same setup, just with the 1793 resonator and probably going to show my ignorance here.. is there any issue going from the 2 something pipes out of the cats, to the 3” in the muffler, back to a 2.5 in the resonator, in terms of airflow? Or are exhausts not typically that sensitive (at least on our rigs)?

Edit: 1793 is not the answer. Undriveable at 75mph lol

All identical parts installed on mine and drone at 75 (1600-1900rpm) is absolutely brain melting.. not sure why the difference between our rigs, but maybe some frequencies somehow getting amplified by aftermarket skid plates. They’re ahead of the muffler obviously but idk. Back to factory muffler for me.

I've been wanting to upgrade my LC200 exhaust, but the risk of drone has been a big concern. Been there, done that with a previous V8 4Runner and aftermarket exhaust drone, and not interested in repeating that mistake.

I tried working with a local well-regarded custom exhaust shop on this, but I didn't get the warm fuzzies that I'd be happy with their service.

Thus, the somewhat expensive Dirty Deeds option has been on my mind a lot more lately. I know the Dirty Deeds (DD) exhaust works extremely well on Tundras, but I seem to recall a handful of LC200 guys swapping their DD exhausts for DD versions with larger mufflers due to unhappiness with noise levels when towing, climbing hills, or carrying family members.

Can anyone with a DD exhaust comment on how much drone, if any, they've had with their DD system? If you swapped to a larger muffler, was the issue drone or simply too loud?

I fully support you getting a DD exhaust. That way I can check it out in person, haha!

I had the same issue. After some time I just didn’t notice it as much. My wife learned to absolutely hate it so there’s that. I loved the start up, slow cruises on the beach with the low rumble and the open loud acceleration, but at times it did get annoying on longer trips. Now that im in an LX I don’t miss it one bit and really enjoy the complete silence.

Agreed. Pretty much anything not in that RPM range sounded great but anything INSIDE that range was brutal.. like made me nauseous. All good, $400 lesson that I'm just a stock exhaust person from here on out lol.

Updating this thread since there really isn't much out there on 200 series exhaust mods. Decided to give this a go for myself but went with a Borla ProXS 40349 as they have the reputation of being quiet, plus that tundra video seemed pretty up my alley. The muffler is a 3"/2.5" single/dual with a 4x9.5x19" body. Got it installed Tuesday with no other mods. It's a mixed bag but ultimately a no go in my opinion. Once warm it's definitely louder than stock outside the truck but not obnoxiously so. You're not going to set off any car alarms. Nice tone, really smooth, a little higher pitched and less rumbly than all the magnaflows I've had on my last 5 vehicles. Very "euro" sounding is the adjective I want to use. It's actually also quite agreeable at most RPMs. With the radio on at usual levels it's just barely noticeable in the background. BUT, here's the kicker...between 1900-2500 RPMs it's absolutely brain melting drone. Just an incredibly loud nauseatingly annoying bwaaaaaaaaa at 151hz (according to an app on my iphone). Above and below it's just fine. My wife noticed a difference but did not complain....until the engine was under load on the freeway going uphill.

I considered welding up a quarter wavelength resonator myself this weekend but when I got under the truck there really isn't a good place to put it (at least on an LX). The 151hz frequency would need around a 28" long pipe to block the drone but unless I lowered the muffler a few inches and got rid of the disconnect right after the muffler, there's just no room. Doing so would set the muffler a little lower than the frame rails which I don't want to do and I also don't want to do away with the disconnect. No dice.

Here are my thoughts: A similar Borla muffler on a tundra is significantly quieter at all RPMs yet also doesn't seem to drone. Watching more videos I've also noticed the factory muffler on a tundra is much smaller than a stock 200 series. Ours measures about 8.5x12x24". This is making me think we 200 series owners just need something larger. I'm going to try the largest Magnaflow offering and see how it goes. It's a #12588. 5x11x22". I've found a single youtube video of a tundra with this exact muffler and it honestly sounds stock. I'm already out a few hundred because I had a shop do the initial welding for me. This go around I'll weld it myself. Worse case another $200 gone and I'll put it back to stock. Best case I like it and get to make fun noises everywhere I go. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for putting in the R & D.

Ultimately, if you want a good exhaust note on this truck without drone, you really need to get a BA Muffler.

I know Keith at BA Muffler spent a ton of time and a lot of trial and error to make a Helmholtz resonator on the exhaust system that dang near made the drone nonexistent in the cabin (especially if you get the 10 or 12 inch setup). I had the 12 inch setup and the exhaust note was a little too quiet, and the 8 inch is a little too loud, so the 10 inch would have been perfect.

Keith actually swapped out my 12 for the 8 for free, other than paying for the shipping costs. I didn’t want to bother him again to go to 10 though.

Not exactly sure why these trucks drone so much, but it may have to do with the insulation in the cabin.

During the summer, I swap out the exhaust so I can enjoy it on the road with the windows down. But during the winter, I go back to stock to enjoy the nice quiet cabin. $25 for a new seal on the back end of the exhaust and 30-40 minutes of my time is all it takes to swap them out.
