Good eye!!! I would love to know if that could be the problem. I don’t wanna get rid of because I love the sound.
Also based on my reading of this thread and others I believe the resonator is a must. As I am thinking this through I would look to change the muffler and place it as much forward as possible and keep the resonator.
Also: the 200 Series / LX570 muffler system is this way fir a reason based on Toyota literature. I will put a link if I re find it.

I just spoke to the exhaust shop and they will look at it. But he said that 5-6 inches makes no difference. So I don’t know either. Strange how identical systems sound different.

There are custom sets being sold in the market with muffler and resonator; for the ones wanting to replace both and resonator.

Exactly! So now to figure out how best to implement the idea with the Magnaflow.

My tentative plan is to simply do the Magnaflow muffler and a j-pipe, with stock resonator and tip. I need to get my other project car sold, though, before starting anything new. Maybe within the coming month.
When you're done I'd love to check it out. I'm usually in the Springs one weekend a month...

Yeah waiting for other folks to do stuff first is always the wise way to go. Don’t make this mistake!

For removing just the resonator though, when I had the factory system reinstalled I had the shop leave of the rear resonator off and tuck the pipe high and tight just to get a bit better departure angle (I had previously dented it on a rock), and as someone very sensitive to drone, I genuinely can’t tell that it’s not there, truck sounds identical. It’s very cheap and easy to test, just chop the pipe right before the resonator and take it off, drive around, if if you notice any difference, they can just weld it right back where they cut it.
I want to remove my resonator to improve the angle of departure also. Can you post a picture of what yours looks like after delete/adding pipe? I assume that the heat that the exhaust puts out needs to be exhausted out from the undercarriage, so I would need to add a pipe where the resonator is now.

Do y’all see any issues with just replacing the muffler alone with the Magnaflow and keeping the stock piping and resonator. I want a little grumble but not a full blown exhaust replacement.

I was thinking the same about Borla.

Borla uses 304 stainless steel v. Magnaflow use of 409 stainless.

I submitted inquiries to both companies for a system and neither have gotten back. We're closer to Magnaflow, but if I'm building it myself I'd prefer the 304 steel as it resists rust much better than 409.

Metallurgy corrosion resistance is complex. It’s true that 304 SS is better over all corrosion (rust) resistance but not chloride (salt) resistance. So beach or northern rust belt, don’t think 304 is bullet proof. 316 would be a good choose if it were available.

I would love some more sound out of my 11 and was looking at doing something similar to this... But my 2c: everyone has different levels of acceptable for drone. Some ears are just much less sensitive than others. I can hear the drone in this video and it would drive me absolutely insane at highway cruising or towing. It's definitely not the worse I've heard but it's there for sure.

On a previous (non 200 series) rig I added a magnaflow and got terrible (for me) drone. My wife agreed it was annoying though she didn't seem as bothered as I was. A few friends thought I was crazy and they didn't seem to notice any drone at all. Through some sciencing and trial and error I ended up with a custom helmholtz resonator setup that pretty much kept volume there when I wanted it but killed 90% of the drone in a 2-300RPM window where my cruising speed was. Very odd sensation but science is cool like that. It'd be drone drone drone drone then I hit like 1900-2100 RPM then boom silence. And after getting above that drone builds again. Dirty Deeds looks to use something like that. Also magnaflow's own overland series incorporates them too I believe.

This was my personal setup. Please ignore my mediocre welding skills and totally super safe osha approved welding table haha.

I’m going to start with just replacing the stock muffler with either the Magnaflow #12288 or Borla #40670, and hope that the stock resonator handles any drone. If there is drone after that I might try different resonators or put the stock muffler back on.

I love how Carven R/TR sounds with the 5.7 but it almost guarantees a drone to which Carven said it would need a J-Pipe to correct.

I assume a muffler swap requires cutting out the stock muffler and welding in a new one? Then having to do that again if you have to go back to stock?

I’d like to hear the borla, as I’ve had them on several vehicles and really like it. I don’t know if I’ve just gotten used to the sound but I really don’t even notice any droan anymore. Is it possible the exhaust is “breaking” in? I really like it and think it sounds great, I’ve gotten several compliments on it as well. The wife doesn’t even notice the Highway droan anymore either.

This is the closest I could find to how our trucks might sound with the Borla #40670. The guy in the vid is somewhat disappointed but I think it sounds pretty good.
